Anwar Cancels Order for New Merc Made by Previous PM

If you were a Prime Minister, what car would you drive?

A Jaguar? A BMW? A Mercedes?

Well, for Malaysian prime minister Anwar Ibrahim, it’s none of the above.

Anwar Cancels Order for New Merc Made by Previous PM

An order for a new Mercedes S600 limousine by the previous administration of the Prime Minister’s Department has been cancelled, PM Anwar said on Monday (28 November).

He said that the order was made by a previous prime minister, but did not reveal his identity.

“Actually, this Mercedes was ordered by a previous prime minister. So, I checked if I could cancel it and I managed to do that,” he said at the Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council meeting.

So, what car will the PH chairman be driving now?

“The Mercedes hasn’t arrived, so I’m using this (Toyota Camry).

“I can use any car that is available,” Anwar humbly announced.

His rationale behind rejecting the car was that this culture of buying a new official car for every PM was a waste of public funds.

According to Berita Harian, the purchase of the Mercedes was mooted during the time of the Muhyiddin Yassin government and then approved by Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s government.

The Mercedes S600 costs upwards of RM1.35 million (S$ 410 thousand).

Not a small sum.

Anwar Declares 28 November a Public Holiday

Rejecting a car wasn’t the first notable thing Anwar did as new PM.

After his swearing-in ceremony as prime minister on 24 November, he announced that 28 November would be a public holiday.

PM Anwar started his prime ministerial duties on Friday (25 November) morning.

He had initially planned for Friday (25 November) to be a public holiday but decided to postpone it to the following week.

“Foreign investors’ confidence has changed, the ringgit has strengthened and the stock market is fresher,” he said.

“That is why I decided that Friday will not be a public holiday and instead, it will be next Monday.”

PM Anwar announced that his first focus as prime minister is to restore and strengthen the nation’s economy. As such, he has decided to let the post-election economic uptrend continue and not stop it prematurely on Friday.

“It is not for Anwar, not for the party leaders, but to give this new sense of confidence to Malaysians that this is their land and their country.”

On one hand, I’d love to see Anwar succeed as PM, on the other, I’m still enjoying the discounted shopping across the border.

Well, let’s see how it goes.
