Man to be Charged for Attempted Murder After He Stabbed an NParks Safe-Distancing Officer

You’d have heard of the Sovereign woman who DGAF about the laws in Singapore. You’d have heard of the man who spat at a police officer when he was in the police station.

People’s tempers are at their worst during this Circuit Breaker period, but for you to stab and nearly kill a person who told you to wear a mask?

This is a first.

Today, at around noon, two NParks officers were installing SafeEntry sign along the Sungei Serangoon Park Connector. SafeEntry signs are boards that allow people to scan a QR code so that contact tracing can be done easier—something that is in all NTUC FairPrice outlet entrances le.

The officers then came across a 61-year-old Singaporean, whom we should call AMIS (Angriest Man in Singapore).

AMIS was cutting plants illegally at the park connector and did not have a mask on.

And so, the officers confronted him.

It’s unknown what happened, but AMIS got so triggered during the engagement that he stabbed one of the officers. The victim “sustained serious injuries to his chest, arm and hand”, but was conscious when he was taken to Changi General Hospital.

AMIS then fled the scene with his bicycle, but police officers managed to establish his identity within 1.5 hour and arrested him.

The police said, “He will be remanded for further investigations and the police will seek a court order to send him for psychiatric assessment.”

In addition to the charge of attempted murder, which will take place in court this Wednesday (6 May 2020), he would also be investigated for possession of offensive weapons in public places and breach of safe-distancing measures.

The penalty for attempt murder is a jail term of up to 15 years and a fine.

But in this case, whereby hurt is done to a person, he could be jailed for life.

And the police has harsh words for him: “This is an egregious act of violence inflicted on a public servant who was performing his duties. The man will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

The victim is now being treated and his condition is unknown yet.

Minister for the Environment and Water Resources: Shocked at What Happened

Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli, who’s in charge of the safe distancing enforcement officers, is shocked at the actions of AMIS, and said again that violence and complete disregard for the officers are unacceptable. He then urged everyone to cooperate with the enforcement officers and ambassadors.

Am shocked that one of our Enforcement Officers, from NParks, was attacked today by a member of the public who was not wearing a mask. When engaged, he turned aggressive and attacked the officer with a sharp instrument. The Police have arrested the assailant, and he will be charged in court on 6 May for attempted murder. He will also be investigated for possession of offensive weapons in public places and breaches of safe distancing measures.

Yesterday, a woman who was not wearing a mask allegedly assaulted a member of the public when advised to put on a mask. The police are investigating her for voluntarily causing hurt, causing public nuisance, and breaching safe distancing measures.

Such violence and complete disregard for safe distancing is absolutely unacceptable. I thank the Police for their swift actions in looking into the cases. I would like to underscore that ANY form of abuse or attack against public officers constitutes a grave offence. Egregious perpetrators will be prosecuted in court.

Since the start of the Circuit Breaker, our officers have worked tirelessly and made personal sacrifices to keep Singapore safe. Many of them have taken on safe distancing duties, over and above their regular, ongoing work. They are unarmed and performing a national duty to keep us safe from community spread of COVID-19. They deserve to be treated with respect. Their families are waiting for them to return home safely each day. It is our collective responsibility to look out for them, just as they are looking out for us.

I urge the public to cooperate with our Enforcement Officers and Ambassadors, and to comply with safe distancing measures — these are in place to keep all of us safe against COVID-19.

The NParks officer is currently warded at a hospital for surgery. My thoughts are with the officer and his family. I wish him a speedy recovery.
