Crazy Rich Asians The Movie is coming out soon, and suffice it to say that the hype is real. After all, it's a Hollywood movie about Asians in Singapore... What could possibly go wrong? So with anticipation for Crazy Rich Asians reaching fever-high pitch, parodies have sprung up one after another, with Youtube channels keen to milk- join in the CRA fun. And local Youtube channel Night Owl Cinematics is one such producer. https://youtu.be/irWoMzLD0OU Featuring top-notch cinematography and aesthetic visuals that match the original frame-to-frame, this is one parody you'll be forgiven for thinking is the real thing. Michelle Chong, the artiste behind loveable personas such as Premium Ah Lian (why is she always changing BF ah?), Leticia and numerous more, has jumped onto the bandwagon with her own rendition, and this time she has handpicked Ah Lian to star in the video. I wasn't disappointed. Not at all. I mean, just look at this scene opener. Rich Boyfriend: "So we've been dating for over a week now, and I think it's time people met my beautiful girlfriend. How about we take an adventure West?" Ah Lian: "Wow! Paris? Good. I want to eat the... baguette." Rich Boyfriend: "No, I meant Bukit Timah..." Seriously? I might be no particular slang advocate, but... LMFAOTTADO (Laugh my fat ass off the table and die outside). Typical Ah Lian For the entirety of the two minutes I was watching it, I felt hard-pressed not to laugh. I mean, how can you not, especially when Ah Lian's so darn superficial it hurts (because truth hurts), and the whole set-up just seems so comical in retrospect. Vulgar, smexy and flashy... what more can you ask from a girl, really? But of course, there are parts I didn't exactly chortle at, and as you might've guessed it they're the commercial parts. Image: Michelle Chong Facebook Page Granted, Michelle Chong did include them in a way that isn't just undisruptive but actually fits into the plot (though it can hardly be considered world-changing), but even so, I still found it hard to appreciate such blatant product placements. Not that we can complain though. If you've ever seen our videos you would know that we're 101% guilty of that too. No, 201% because clients ask for them, and we need to pay the bills (plus the boss needs a new BMW).
