In Singapore, sexual offences are dealt with by the law in a strict manner.

Especially so, if the wrongdoings were carried out with minors.

But recently, a man was charged for exactly that.

Prominent Figure in the Catholic Community in S’pore Charged for Sexual Offences Against Teenagers

Yesterday (20 Jan), a man in his 60s was charged with sexual offences against at least two teenage boys. The offences were carried out more than a decade ago.

Furthermore, the perpetrator is known to be a distinguished figure in the local Catholic community.

He cannot be named due to a gag order issued by the courts. As such, the following details are banned:

  • Identity of the offender
  • Designation
  • Occupation
  • Alleged victims’ identities
  • School at which the alleged offences happened in

However, here are the facts that we do know.

The man is charged for performing a sexual act on a minor back in 2005. Separately, he also performed oral sex on a boy. That happened sometime between 1 Jan 2005 and 31 Dec 2006.

At the time of occurrence then, the victims was between 14 and 16 years old.

Moreover, in 2007, the man also allegedly performed a similar act on another boy. The minor was between 14 and 15 years old then.

According to The Straits Times, he’s reportedly not a priest.

Remanded in Complex Medical Centre in the prison

Yesterday (20 Jan), the man was tasked to be remanded at the Changi Prison Complex Medical Centre for psychiatric evaluation. The police prosecutor wanted to find out if the man was “suffering from an abnormality of mind that could have impaired his mental responsibility for his act”.

Initially, District Judge Terence Tay said he would postpone the remand issue till next Monday. He would also set the bail quantum at S$30,000. However, the man’s lawyer Edmond Pereira subsequently told the court that his client has chosen to be remanded instantly.

If the name Edmond Pereira sounds familiar, it’s because it’s his law firm that drafted NOC’s first letter to @sgcickenrice.

The conditions for the bail include:

  • Staying away from the vicinity of the alleged location where the incident took  place
  • Not contacting the alleged victims and any other witnesses

After his psychiatric evaluation, the accused will return to court on 10 Feb.

Not the first incident of such

Back in 2013, a similar case also happened. A pastor was charged with having indecent acts with a 15-year-old church member.

The 45-year-old married man faced three charges then. Between end September and early October in 2011, the duo had sex at a park near Bartley MRT station.

Moreover, the man was also accused of carrying an obscene act with the young girl by holding her hand to rub him.
