When a man in his seventies returned home to retrieve the keys he had forgotten, his wife did not come to answer the door no matter how knocked or shouted.
Since his wife had just undergone a leg surgery, he was worried that something might have happened to her, so he called the police.
It was only after the Singapore Civil Defence officers broke open the door that he realised that she had slept too deeply.
Knock, Knock, Who’s There?
This incident happened at around 3:30pm on Wednesday (19 Oct), at Block 680 Choa Chu Kang Crescent.
According to Shin Min Daily News, a passer-by had noticed the ambulance downstairs and saw the SCDF officers sawing off a door lock.
The man in his seventies—who prefers to remain anonymous—told the reporter that he had forgotten his keys at home.
When he came back for his keys, the metal gate was locked but the wooden door was open, so he called for his wife to come out to open the door. However, no matter how knocked or shouted, his wife of many years did not answer.
Hence, he could only ask his neighbours for help.
He said, “My neighbour and I called out loudly to her for a while more, but my wife still didn’t answer the door, so I called a locksmith.”
However, the locksmith said that they would need an hour before arriving at his location.
Feeling anxious, he dialled for the police instead.
Since his wife recently went for a leg surgery, he was afraid that she might have fainted or that something had happened to her. If he were to wait for that long, it would be too late.
Once the police and SCDF reached the scene, they sawed off the lock and broke into the house to check on the man’s wife.
As it turns out, she was merely in deep sleep, not in a faint.
When the wife was interviewed, she said: “When I woke up to a huge group of people in the house, I thought something had happened! It gave me a scare.”
In response to media enquiries, the SCDF confirmed that they received a call for assistance for the aforementioned incident. After the SCDF forced their way into the unit, the paramedics checked the woman over for injuries.
The other party refused to go to the hospital.
