Everyone has been extremely hyped ever since safe management measures have been relaxed on 26 April.
So we are sorry to be a wet blanket and inform you that yet another Omicron sub-variant has been detected locally.
Found Via Active Monitoring By Authorities
According to The Straits Times, the new sub-variant, also known as BA.2.12.1, is a descendant of the BA.2 variant that was the main driver of Singapore’s Omicron wave.
The new variant was detected through active monitoring of the COVID-19 situation and genetic sequencing said the Ministry of Health (MOH) on its website on Thursday (28 April).
The two individuals who have tested positive with this variant have since been in self-isolation.
Few Local Cases Detected With BA.2.12.1 Variant
Since mid-April, only three cases in Singapore have been infected with the BA.2.12.1 variant so far.
This sub-variant is also not on the World Health’s Organisation (WHO) list of variants of concern nor interest, or a variant under monitoring.
This is because due to the extensive number of BA.2 variant cases that have occurred, the BA.2.12.1 variant can’t get far as a result of the antibodies developed during the BA.2 wave.

Since mid March, more than 98 percent of COVID-19 cases in Singapore have been infected with the BA.2 variant according to MOH.
Transmissibility Of COVID-19 Sub-Variants
Preliminary studies have shown that the BA.2 variant is significantly more transmissible compared to the original sub-variant of Omicron termed BA.1.
However in general, sub-variants of Omicron are highly contagious but less fatal compared to Delta or previous variants of COVID-19. This is also the case for the BA.2.12.1 variant.
According to Medpagetoday, it’s safe to regard the BA.2.12.1 variant as a “gnat”—a variant that’s pesky and annoying but ultimately, not fatal.
So fear not, even though the new sub-variant is here on the island—you can pretty much set your mind at ease and enjoy the relaxed measures.
