It is already 2018; I am sure by now we are already used to the fact that our trusty (note the sarcasm) MRT breaks down every now and then.
On top of that, bizarre incidents ( read :weather, exploding tiles, cockroach in car) are reported every few days.
And when combined, you get ‘bizarre incident at MRT station’, which was exactly what happened yesterday (5 Feb).
According to Channel NewsAsia, smoke was seen coming out from an escalator at Ang Mo Kio MRT station.
A/N: red line again???
The smoke led all the way to the underground linkway to AMK Hub.

In a statement released to the media, it was known that all three escalators leading to the linkway were shut down and the linkway was closed for safety reasons.
During that time, train services on the North-South Line were not affected.
But I can guess that passengers getting off at AMK were pretty alarmed.
According to a commuter, there was a “pungent smell” and it was difficult to breathe.
Initial investigations suggest that the smoke originated from “overheated motor bearings in the faulty escalator which were replaced earlier today (5 Feb)”.
Further checks will be conducted before the escalator is up and running again.
Later on in the evening, the linkway was reopened at about 6.10pm.
The escalators were still down.
Commuters have to use the escalator steps on the two escalators next to the faulty one if they want to access the linkway.
Station staff were guiding commuters, elderly and those in need were advised to use the lift.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) noted that one person was taken to Singapore General Hospital for smoke inhalation. SMRT confirmed that it was an employee.
Fire engines from SCDF were parked outside the MRT station and a cordon was set up around the faulty escalator.
SMRT technicians were also on-site.
Thoughts
I’m pretty sure the incident undoubtedly caused some inconvenience to commuters, but let’s hope that SMRT can resolve the incident well.
After all, aren’t we all pretty much reliant on our MRT system no matter what?
