Ever since the 2008 Milk Scandal in China, my friends have been wary about buying milk from foreign sources.
However, what if I tell you that there’s a possibility you might actually buy fake infant formula from your trusty neighbourhood stores?
(Yeah, quit doubting me.)
The Malaysian authorities have seized 210 boxes of alleged fake infant formula in Johor Bahru.
The products were confiscated from drug stores and convenience stores after a total of five raids were conducted, according to Johor Domestic Trade and Consumerism Ministry director Khairul Anwar Bachok.
Amongst the raided premises, three were found to be selling fake milk worth around RM42,000.
Whoa, that’s a lot of fake milk. I’m glad they have been taken off the shelves. Wouldn’t want any kids to consume them!
Mr Khairul has also said that a toddler was found suffering from severe vomiting after consuming the infant formula from one of these shops.
“The fake infant formula boxes were placed together with the original ones on the shelves and sold at the same price as the original ones at about RM200 each,” said Mr Khairul.
“When asked about the matter, the 50-year-old business operator claimed that he did not know that the 1.8kg boxes of infant formula were fake,” Mr Khairul added.
The invoice for the purchase of the infant formula apparently bore the name of a fake company and address just to confuse the authorities.
“Hence, we will intensify the raids in other districts to detect fake infant formula in an effort to identify the source of the fake producers,” said Mr Khairul.
Both seized infant formula and original formula were sent for testing. Investigations are stilling ongoing at the moment.
Well, I hope the authorities will be able to get rid of all these fake milk once and for all.
The producers of these fake products should be placed behind bars and force-fed the fake products for the things they’ve done. Just saying.
