If you remember, Huawei ran a $54 smartphone promotion back in 2019.

They got into huge trouble for that promotion because even before stores were open, some outlets were already sold out.

While most of the elderly were very cute and the policemen who had to be called in were professional, one particular lady took offence to Huawei’s “fake” marketing gimmick.

She made a huge scene in front of the Huawei shop at JEM and was subsequently arrested by the police.

Yes, while some of the adorable aunties asked if the policemen have eaten, this lady was arrested instead.

And no one heard anything more about the lady, until now, that is.

Woman Who Made a Scene Outside Huawei Store for $54 Phone Jailed for 2 Weeks

On 22 Oct 2020, the 54-year-old woman, Ng Puay Chin, was sentenced to 2 weeks’ jail and made to pay a S$1,000 fine.

She pleaded guilty to the charge of harassment and using criminal public force on a servant.

Another three charges were taken into consideration for sentencing.

On 26 July, after she couldn’t get a ticket to purchase the S$54 phone at the Huawei outlet in JEM, the lady decided to “bang table”.

Name-Calling

According to TODAYonline, a crowd of about 300 people had gathered in front of the shop.

Staff had issued tickets to waiting customers outside the shop and they reportedly only had 46 of them.

Furious, Ng strode up to the front and called the manager a “liar” and a “scammer”. She also told him to “watch out”.

At 11am, when the Huawei store opened for business, Ng rushed into the store with the rest of the crowd.

Ng demanded for a smartphone to be issued to her and attempted to rally the crowd against the staff.

Even when told she was disrupting business, she refused to stop her actions.

Police Called In

In the end, police officers had to be called in to help manage and disperse the crowd.

Yet even then, Ng refused to leave until she got what she wanted.

When the police officers warned her that they’ll have to arrest her, she reportedly told them to try.

“It’s okay, everyone is watching. I’m above 50 and a woman.”

Gender equality at its finest, people.

She also called a police officer a “hooligan”.

The confrontation lasted for 15 minutes and police officers managed to pin her down after.

While she was being arrested, Ng was single-minded in her purpose and continued shouting about Huawei being a “scammer”.

Her lawyer had asked for a fine but was rejected by the judge based on her defiant actions, especially how she asks for everyone to record the arrest on video.

Ng will serve her sentence from 5 Nov 2020.

In short, Ng was a 53-year-old strawberry. She didn’t get what she wanted, threw a tantrum, and realised there are people with bigger sticks out there in the world.

Huawei In Trouble Too

Ng wasn’t the only one in trouble.

Huawei was criticised by the president of CASE, the consumer watchdog in Singapore, for their misleading $54 smartphone promotion.

They had to come out and explain exactly how they determined the number of phones to provide for in the promotion and had to undergo an investigation by Singapore regulators.

Huawei also had to give out $100 vouchers to at least 2,000 people to make up for their mistake. That’s $200,0000 right there.

At least with the new advertising guidelines coming up, there’ll be lesser of such misleading ads anymore. Hopefully.

After all, if Dollar Value can let go of their “Closing Down Sale” advertising, anything can happen. Right?
