IKEA S’pore Glass Cabinet Allegedly “Suddenly” Shattered for No Reason, Injuring Man

It’s always exciting to explore IKEA.

It’s even more exciting when the IKEA workers come to help fix up a new piece of furniture.

This man claimed that his glass cabinet from IKEA Singapore “suddenly” shattered for no reason.

Cabinet “Shattered” for No Reason

On 28 April, the man took to Facebook group Complaint Singapore to recount his ordeal.

He posted photos of the shattered glass cabinet with the sarcastic caption, “Well done, IKEA Singapore.”

His original caption doesn’t have much context, but he reveals more in the post’s comments.

He commented, “They offered an IKEA voucher before I returned home to look at the actual situation. The actual situation is much worse, as you can see from the close-up photos.”

He urged others to refrain from purchasing this series of glass cabinets from IKEA.

According to the man, he has had the glass cabinet for over a year.

He also claimed the glass cabinet suddenly shattered.

The man said that IKEA workers helped him build the cabinet.

One photo shows the man’s finger bleeding, probably from the glass.

What Happened?

According to the man, he has no idea how the glass cabinet shattered.

Some netizens have experienced similar incidents.

Some people have ideas on how this happened, and their theories are pretty scientific.

One netizen suggested that the magnetic hinges of the glass cabinet were screwed too tightly, resulting in too much pressure on the glass and causing it to break.

Other netizens suggested that it could have been Singapore’s weather that caused it to shatter.

This is a plausible theory.

4 April was the hottest day of the year thus far, and the warm weather is expected to continue until May 2023.

According to a press release by Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) on 17 April, the weather for the last two weeks of April would see a daily maximum temperature of 34 degrees Celsius on most days.

You’ve probably felt the sweltering heat recently.

The thundery showers we’ve been seeing, mixed with the hot weather, are probably the culprits for the glass cabinet randomly shattering.

Changes in temperature cause the glass to expand and contract, which can put it under pressure and cause it to shatter.

Hooray, climate change.

Cabinet is Probably Made of Tempered Glass

According to the man, his glass cabinet is the DETOLF glass cabinet from IKEA.

If you go to its product page on IKEA’s website, you will see that the glass is tempered.

Tempered glass will break into thousands of tiny pieces, while regular glass breaks into large, sharp shards.

This makes tempered glass the safer option.

However, it’s still susceptible to shattering.

The US Glass Industry states that the chance of tempered glass breaking is 1 in 100, so it’s a common occurrence.

Despite this concerning statistic, there’s some good news.

According to a 2021 article by Channel News Asia, assistant professor of engineering product development at the Singapore University of Technology and Design Rajesh Elara is helping to design robots that can clean and scan glass panels for cracks.

Thus, the robots would be able to alert users early to micro-cracks the naked eye can’t see and can take the necessary precautions like replacing the glass.

Since you don’t have superpowers that can control the weather, IKEA recommends other ways to reduce the risk of the glass cabinet’s tempered glass breaking.

The product listing says, “Handle with care! A damaged edged or scratched surface can cause the glass to suddenly crack and/or break.

“Avoid collisions from the side – this is where the glass is most vulnerable.

“This furniture must be fixed to the wall with the enclosed wall fastener.”

Another Time IKEA Got Flamed

In December 2022, a woman made a TikTok video to detail her unpleasant experience with IKEA Kinpsa baskets.

Allegedly, the baskets were infested with insects.

Other netizens began speaking out about similar encounters.

Apparently, when she complained to IKEA, she was told that the insects were from her house.

Following the viral video, IKEA Singapore told TODAY that it had temporarily removed the product from physical stores and online and launched an internal investigation.
