LRT Trains Did Not Collide, But Merely Stalled, According to LTA & SBS

It would have been one heck of a news story should two LRT train-cars collide against each other, but that’s simply not true.

Well, at least according to LTA and SBS.

Yesterday, it was reported in Stomp that two train-cars on the Sengkang LRT line had “collided”. According to Stomper Hong, it occurred around 7:00 p.m. yesterday (3 July 2017).

That article has since been removed from the Stomp website, but the Straits Times has updated its report.

A train-car had stopped between Sengkang Town Centre and Renjong stations. Following that, another train-car allegedly hit the one in front, leading to a “collision” that caused some passengers to fall down due to the “impact”.

It turned out that the train-cars have stalled instead. Lest you don’t know what “stalling” means, it’s a sudden stop of a vehicle due to various reasons.

Here’s SBS’s statement with a rather fierce language.

If you can’t read the announcement, here’s it in its entirety:

You might have come across a The Straits Times article today about 2 LRT trains colliding on the Sengkang line last evening (3 Jul 2017).

Land Transport Authority – We Keep Your World Moving and SBS Transit Ltd would like to clarify that the article is erroneous and misleading, as there was no collision on the Sengkang LRT system.

The incident last evening involved a coupled two-car train which had stalled in between the Sengkang Town Centre and Renjong Stations. The two Light Rail Vehicles were travelling as one train on the system.

The sudden stalling may have caused some passengers who were not holding onto the standing poles/grab bars to lose their balance, and may have given the wrong impression that the trailing train-car had hit the one in front. SBS Transit staff subsequently reset the fault and manually drove the coupled train to Renjong Station to detrain passengers safely.

Because let’s face it: if a train rear-ends another train, the news would have been reported not just in Singapore but other countries as well #justsaying
