LTA Encourages Taxi / PHV Drivers & Passengers to Wear Masks Even When It’s Optional

Ladies and gentlemen, the moment we’ve all been waiting for has arrived: Masks will no longer be compulsory and fully optional wherever you go, except in public transport and healthcare facilities, from 29 August 2022.

No more mocking a person behind a mask and back to smiling with our mouths and not just squinting. Yay.

You can watch this video for a summary of what was covered in the press conference that was held yesterday (24 Aug):

Don’t celebrate too much though.

LTA Encourages Taxi & PHV Drivers & Passengers to Wear Masks Even When It’s Optional

Land Transport Authority (LTA) still encourages the public and drivers to wear their masks for extra precautions in taxis and private hire cars.

Transport organisations like Gojek, Grab and Premier Taxis also jumped in to support LTA’s recommendations and advises the public to put masks on, especially if they feel unwell.

Strides Mobility even suggested drivers to roll down their windows whenever possible to allow ventilation.

In other words, keep your masks on…especially if you feel unwell.

Masks Required in Other Settings

Masks will still have to be worn on public transport areas like MRT, public buses and indoor boarding areas such as MRT platforms and bus interchanges.

If you’re heading down to a hospital or a resident care home or just any area of healthcare, masks will also be required as a precaution for sick patients.

In addition, it’s now confirmed that masks will be required for food handlers as well. This is to ensure food safety and prevent substances like spit from dropping into your meal. Face shields are not approved under the Singapore Food Agency so if you’re using one, it’s best to change it.
