Man Does Detailed Slow Maths to Conclude That the Rolls-Royce Can Pass Through With a 30cm Extra Space

Throughout school, I flunked maths in every permutation and combination possible. But this man definitely did not.

The Tiong Bahru Rolls-Royce incident sparked a lot of funny memes and insults, but this man went on another level.

He pulled up mathematics. He pulled up the numbers. He pulled up mechanical engineering.

Facebook user Bosco Lim Jiahe posted a 11-slide carousel analysing the actual dimensions of the road to come to a conclusion on whether the Rolls-Royce could have reasonably passed through the gap, from the depth perception in the images provided.

The Breakdown

The first two slides were to show a general basis of his proof. The first shows that based on the time of the day, the shadow shown would be able to evidence the true distance of how far the rear was out.

The second slide proved that the arrow was printed right in the middle of the road, with Bosco Lim hashtagging #GoodJobRoadPrinter.

The third slide was the official dimensions of the Rolls-Royce car: 2018mm, or 79.4 inches.

With these calculations and the original viral video, he managed to figure out that the road would be approximately around 341.38cm.

Given that according to the official specifications, the Rolls-Royce is 201.8cm, there would be 1.39m (1,390cm) for him to clear the road, not accounting for the white BMW.

Bosco Lim continued to calculate in the next few slides exactly how much the white BMW was protruding out of the lot, and superimposed it onto the view from inside of the Rolls-Royce, which led him to the conclusion that there would still be 50cm for clearance.

Assuming that the Rolls-Royce website did not take into consideration the side view mirror (20cm) for the official specifications, it would still leave the Rolls-Royce with 30cm of extra space.

Criticisms and Limitations

Some netizens pointed out that there were possible inaccuracies unaccounted for, such as the distortion of the lens.

To this, Bosco Lim replied that assumptions have to be made to do the calculations. In his original post, he already cautioned that Disclaimer #ThisMayBeTotallyOff “, jokingly attributing this to “#MinisterSaysMyDegreeExpired 😒”, referencing MP Ang Wei Neng’s controversial remark in Parliament.

To know more about the incident, watch this to the end:

However, the photo from the perspective of inside the Rolls-Royce did spark much sympathy for the driver, with many claiming that they would have chosen not to drive down the road as well, even with the 30cm extra space.

Either way, props to Bosco Lim for doing the hard, slow maths for us. We appreciate it. In your words, since you #JustNeedToDoThisCosBoLiao, we also #JustNeedToReadThisCosBoLiao.
