Were you thinking about renewing your Netflix subscription?
No need for that—we’re going to get a live busker version of a Singaporean-style Street Man Fighter soon.
Mediacorp Launching Busking Competition Called “Battle Of The Buskers”
On Monday (8 May), Mediacorp announced the launch of its reality busking competition called Battle of the Buskers, which we expect will debut between July and November this year.
The competition’s name sounds like it could be a Jack Neo movie.
If you want to impress your crush or serenade some Singaporeans, why not grab a couple of friends and join the competition? Better yet, you could do a one-person act as well!
According to Mediacorp, you can sign up either as a solo act or as a group of no more than five persons.
We express our deepest condolences to the sixth friend who thought their plight ended after the COVID-19 five-person group limit was lifted.
Requirements to Compete in the Battle of the Buskers
However, before you grab your friends to join the busking competition, here’s a litmus test first.
If someone put a gun to your head and made you speak Mandarin, can you?
If your answer is “Wow… I think I might be dead”, here’s a tip from Goody Feed: please hire a Mandarin tutor right now. According to Mediacorp, contestants entering the busking competition must be able to converse in basic Mandarin.
So if you’re a “banana”, we’re guessing you’ll have to stick to making guitar covers on TikTok.

It’s also time to brush up on those JJ Lin lyrics because only Chinese songs can be performed in the busking competition.
That’s not all. You must also get permission from gahmen first—contestants must have a valid Busking Card (Letter of Endorsement) from the National Arts Council.
Contestants below the age of 18 must also ensure that they have obtained the consent of their parent or guardian.
“Pa, can you help me sign this consent form?”
Busking Competition Features Live & Online Audiences As Well As Professional Judges
According to Mediacorp, the busking competition will be happening at “designated busking hotspots islandwide”, with both live and online audiences and professional judges.
Perhaps now that actress Ya Hui has left Mediacorp, she might have time to judge the competition. That is if her new love interests aren’t already flooding her schedule.
If you’re interested in watching your favourite buskers or talented friends compete for the top spot, why not sabo them to join the busking competition?
The not-so-talented among us can submit a recommendation form to nominate others to take centre stage.
Enough with Jeff Ng; let’s all recommend Singapore’s newest “G4” boy band to bring their ‘A’ game to the Battle of the Buskers. Audience engagement will probably skyrocket—even my ah ma will go to Orchard Road to watch Lawrence Wong.
Application and recommendation forms are already open. So what are you waiting for?
Aspiring contestants, do sign up by 26 May, 11:59 pm! If you want to sabo someone, remember to submit the recommendation form by 19 May, 11:59 pm.
