Migrant Worker Jumped into Bukit Timah Canal to Rescue Mother & Son from Fallen Car

Our migrant worker friends have also proven themselves as heroes in other ways, from simple acts of kindness such as helping an elderly woman cross the street or helping an unlucky individual who fell off their bicycle.

For one migrant worker, his quick wits and bravery may have helped to save the lives of a woman and her son, whose car fell into a canal after a major collision.

Mother and Son’s Vehicle Fell Into Canal After Collision at Lutheran Road Junction; Car Reported to Have Spun Multiple Times

According to Shin Min Daily News, their reporters were notified of a traffic accident that occurred at 12.20pm between a black sedan and a blue sport-utility vehicle (SUV) on 9 July.

An eyewitness known as Mr Zhuang (Hanyu Pinyin) introduced himself as a family member of the female driver and boy who were inside the blue SUV.

He said in an interview that the SUV was driving along Queen’s Road in Bukit Timah before colliding into a black sedan at a junction intersecting with Lutheran Road.

After the collision, the blue SUV was reported to have spun around multiple times before crashing through the railing and falling into the neighbouring canal.

A reporter from Shin Min Daily News described a gap that had formed after the SUV broke through the railing.

The railing that was knocked down by the crash was stuck under the rear wheel of the SUV, and the left side of the vehicle was severely dented.

The front bumper and licence plate of the car had also fallen out, and the airbags at two front seats had been inflated.

Migrant Worker Was In Vicinity When Accident Occurred, Jumped Into Canal To Rescue Mother And Son

Upon hearing several loud noises in the vicinity while grabbing lunch with his friends, migrant worker Kudia decided to investigate the source of the commotion.

He found the black sedan that was parked at the side of the road, and upon further investigation discovered the fallen SUV in the canal.

Kudia spotted the mother and son emerging from the vehicle, which had luckily not been overturned during the crash. He observed the mother asking the son if he was hurt, but the son looked too dazed and confused to reply.

Without hesitation, Kudia jumped into the canal and picked up the injured boy. Several other migrant workers, who were Kudia’s friends, worked together to carry the boy out of the canal.

They also lowered a ladder to help the woman climb out of the canal.

No Major Trauma Sustained By Those Injured From Collision

After the heroic act from Kudia and his friends, the 42-year-old female driver and a 12-year-old son were confirmed by the police to have been conscious when they were sent to the hospital.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were taken to the National University Hospital (NUH) for treatment.

Mr Zhuang was thankful that no major trauma was sustained by his two family members and that the SUV had not overturned during the accident.

The 60-year-old driver of the black sedan was seen assisting the police as the accident remains under investigation.
