Remember the celebrated PM Lee, and subsequently the MTF, press conference on 24 Mar 2022?
Then, our health minister wasn’t in the same room as the rest of the MTF, but speaking through a screen from Kuala Lumpur.
Well, it turns out his trip to KL was extremely productive.
Not only did he manage to hash out a deal with Malaysia to open the borders, he got a TikTok account out of it too.
Ong Ye Kung is Now on TikTok After M’sian Politician Convinced Him to Start an Account
Mr Syed Saddiq, a former Malaysian youth and sports minister, has 675,000 followers on TikTok.
On 24 Mar 2022, he posted a video that was watched over 77,000 times with the caption:
New Achievement Unlocked! Convinced the Minister of Health of Singapore to get on TikTok
In the 1-minute video, Mr Syed could be seen making homecooked Asam pedas and Mee Bandung Muar, as well as introducing the Malaysia fare to Mr Ong.
Mr Ong could also be seen creating his TikTok account at the dinner table, under the watchful eye of Mr Syed (and his audience).
While creating his account, Mr Ong could be heard speaking his heartfelt wish; I hope my first follower is a Singaporean.
As for whether that’ll happen or not, probably not since Mr Syed promised to be his first follower.

241 Followers & Counting
Will our health minister become a successful TikToker in the near future? Highly likely.
A quick peek at his TikTok account showed that he has 241 followers, even though he hasn’t followed anyone, liked any videos, or posted any videos.
Mr Ong also met up with his Malaysian counterpart and shot a TikTok video together.
Of course, the question has to be raised: Which country’s hawker food is better; Singapore or Malaysia?

Not The First Singapore Politician on TikTok
Ong Ye Kung, unfortunately, isn’t the first Singaporean politician on TikTok.
His fellow colleague, Finance Minister Lawrence Wong has been on the platform since 2020.

His first video is of him playing Jenga with a student, calling it one of his “favourite games” to play with students.
Meeting People Face To Face
Don’t worry, if you’re wondering whether you can only see your MPs from a screen moving forward.
Several Singapore MPs have announced their intentions to resume Meet-The-People sessions with the residents in their zones.
They include:
- Manpower Minister Tan See Leng
- Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Amy Khor
- Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin
