The first thought that comes to Singaporeans when pig organs are mentioned would be our beloved pig organ soup that we enjoy most on rainy days.
However, instead of consuming this delicacy over in the US, scientists have found a way to revive them.
Well, this may seem like another boring Frankenstein story, but it really is as intriguing as the latest season of Manifest…I think.
How Does the Revival of Organs Work?
Scientists first start off by killing the pig through heart attacks. They then inject the deceased pig with a liquid containing their own blood with the addition of synthetic haemoglobin and other drugs that prevent clots and protect cells.
This explanation may make it seem like a secondary school science experiment, however, we assure you that it is much more complicated than mixing two solutions together.
May Be Able to Save Human Lives
So, how does this concern us, humans?
Well, for one, this new discovery may be able to help organs survive longer. This may be a very big breakthrough because unlike Mark Zuckerberg who’s an android, we humans need our organs to function.
In cases where our organs need to be transplanted, they would have to be left outside for a long period of time, and this is where the discovery comes in.
Here is a little list of how long certain vital organs can be left outside of a body before it expires:
- Heart: 4-6 hours
- Lungs: 4-8 hours
- Liver: 8-12 hours
- Pancreas 12-18 hours
- Intestines 8-12 hours
- Kidneys 24-36 hours
Of course, there is also a possibility that a human can be resuscitated through this discovery.
However, scientists have stated that bringing a person “back from the dead” may mean that they require life support forever, dubbing this scenario “a bridge to nowhere.”
Ethically Questionable Experiments
Wow… who would have seen that coming, right?
Some people questioned the ethicality of the experiments, including one that has the scientist induce a heart attack on an anaesthetised pig, making the blood flow stop. They then leave the innocent dead pig there for an hour before proceeding with the experiment.
Also, it is stated that the pigs performed abnormal movements with their heads and necks during the experiments: a sight that nobody wants to see unless it is from an Insidious franchise.
However, investigators have stated that they took steps to ensure that the pigs did not suffer throughout the experiment. One way was through the use of nerve blockers in their experimental solution to prevent the brain from being active.
Although the prospect of it saving human lives is very enticing, bioethicist, Stephan Latham has said that the solution is still far from human use.
In the meantime, as you have your pig organ soup tonight, do remember that humans are now one more step closer to becoming God (again).
