Scammer With SPF Sticker on Cap Asks, ‘Do You Know S’pore Police?’

Hello hello, do you know Singapore police?

Well, I’m pretty sure everyone knows the police in Singapore.

Maybe everyone except for this guy, who ironically cosplayed as a… policeman.

If this headline seems familiar, it’s because it’s happened before.

Kinda.

Last year, there were a few instances where scammers “dressed up” as Singapore Police Force (SPF) or Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers and tried to video call people in order to scam them.

I’d say that the term “dressed up” is used really loosely here though.

And it seems like this trend has resurfaced lately, with TikTok user @rjfinna sharing her recent experience with a scammer, who’s definitely not a police officer.

In the video, the male scammer is seen wearing a cap with a cutout of the SPF logo stuck right on it.

Ah yes, because there’s a white circular background around the logo.

It also seems like his “uniform” has the same round-shaped paper cutout pasted on it as well.

Uh, A for effort?

In the TikTok video, the user wrote that she accepted the call as she saw that it was from a number that had the SPF logo as its profile photo.

Also, if it hasn’t dawned on you yet, I’m pretty sure SPF will never WhatsApp video call you if they need to contact you. I really do think they have better, more efficient ways of getting hold of you…

Anyway, after a series of “hellos” (like everyone when we’re on a zoom call) and the scammer introducing himself as “Jerry from the Investigation Department”, our dear friend “Jerry” dropped the most important question ever asked.

“You know Singapore police?”

Ah, no lah, I don’t know any of the relevant authorities in a country that I clearly live in.

After being asked by user @rjfinna why he video called her, he said “yah?” and subsequently hung up the phone after she repeated her question.

Well, that was anticlimactic.

Scams in Singapore

With scams of all sorts being on the rise as of late, you’ll never know if you’ll get targetted next.

Additionally, not all scams seem as sketchy as this; there are many believable scams out there that have managed to trick people out of their money or personal data.

So remember to never give out your personal details to anyone through calls or SMSes, even if the guy’s SPF cap doesn’t have a round white background behind it. Trust me, the SPF has better ways to do its job.
