When we think of a shield, we think of the ones that soldiers use during the war to protect themselves from arrows and bullets.
What about things that we cannot see or touch—like scammers, who are hiding behind their screens, hoping to catch a big fish?
Likewise, for scammers, there is actually a “shield” that we can use to block their calls and messages.
This app is known as ScamShield and since November 2020, the ScamShield app has been available to iOS users.
Now, this app is available to Android users.

This app was developed by the National Crime Prevention Centre (NCPC) and Open Government Products.

What can the ScamShield App Do?
The ScamShield app can block calls from blacklisted numbers verified as scam-related.
By doing so, it saves you from the false hope of thinking that it is your crush calling you— or even protects you from losing thousands of dollars.
Apart from scam calls, the app can also identify scam SMS messages. Yes, the kind whereby anonymous users promise to let you earn fast cash by doing absolutely nothing.
A total of 14,349 scam cases were reported this year, which amounts to about $227.8 million dollars lost.
However, the Android version only notifies users of potential scammers while the iOS version can divert scam messages to a junk folder. This is because the Android operating system has limitations.
The scam SMSes are then sent to the NCPC and the police for investigation and collation. The app will be kept updated to protect users from scam calls and messages.
The ScamShield’s iOS version has been downloaded by over 315,000 users and resulted in more than 5.8 million SMSes being reported as well as more than 29,000 scam phone numbers blocked.
With more Android users in Singapore, we might be able to block even more calls and SMSes in the near future.
