Singaporeans are a bunch of kindhearted people who doesn’t mind giving back to society. Based on our actions towards the Covid-19, you already know that’s true.
But why, then, are Singaporeans unwilling to give money to pitiful people on the streets?
That’s because other than being giving and kind, we’re a pretty suspicious bunch too. Especially after the Ren Ci controversy. That and we hate losing out.
So when a pitiful person comes up and says he’s not eaten for a couple of days. And he hopes to get $5 from you?
You’ll wonder how many gullible people have been scammed by him already.
But You Don’t Have To Worry About That With This One-Stop Portal
This is SG United Portal. Yes, it sounds like a soccer club but it’s actually something more.
It’s a one-stop portal which allows Singaporeans to connect with legitimate social causes in Singapore.
That’s right, legitimate. So you’ll know that every dollar you give goes to someone who’s really in need.
Coordinating Singaporeans with National Efforts Against Covid-19
Developed by the Ministry of Culture, Community & Youth (MCCY), they launched the platform on 20 Feb 2020 to rally Singaporeans against the Covid-19.
Through the portal, you can donate money to various funds like the Sayang Sayang fund which provides transport vouchers to healthcare professionals in Singapore
And the Courage Fund which will help support families and people affected by the Covid-19 situation in Singapore.
And it’s not just money.
You can also donate your time and effort by volunteering with the various community efforts around Singapore.
But in my humble opinion, that’s not the best part of the portal.
The True Power of SG United Portal: Enabling Normal S’poreans To Create Their Own Initiatives
Unfortunately, while Singapore is trying to create the best support system possible for vulnerable groups of Singaporeans, there will be some who falls through the cracks of society.
Well, now, you can do something about it.
The United SG Portal allows normal Singaporeans like you and me to create ground-up community initiatives to address the “blind spot” of community efforts in Singapore.
They have experts on hand to advise you on how to succeed with your idea and even provides support if you don’t have enough cash.
Funding given can be up to 80% of your initiative expenditures.
Rallying Together Against Covid-19
You don’t have to own a restaurant, a chicken rice stall or be a celebrity to do your part for Singapore.
No money? Write a tribute for healthcare workers here to show that discrimination, just like haters, comes from the noisy minority.
Maintain your personal hygiene to create less work for our healthcare workers.
And do your part to verify before sharing fake news and possibly destabilising Singapore.
Portal to Live On Even After Covid-19
But there’s one thing to note: this isn’t just a response website to Covid-19. The website will live on long after Covid-19 is beaten and forgotten.
Because no matter whether there’s a virus outbreak or not, there are always more vulnerable groups of people living in Singapore.
You can explore the website for yourself here.
By the way, it’s so nice to see Singaporeans rallying together against something other than an insult to our ice cream sandwich.
Here’s a simplified summary of the South Korea martial law that even a 5-year-old would understand:
