Once in a while, it’s not uncommon for clothes that aren’t properly secured to the bamboo rack to fall off.
But when it’s an air-conditioner compressor that is dangling on its wires (figuratively), it’s time to get the hell out of the dodge.
The Shaky Air Conditioner Unit on the 10th Floor
This incident took place on 21 July, around 1pm in the afternoon, at Block 55 Chai Chee Road.
A nearby grocery store owner, Mr Cai, told Shin Min Daily News reporter that around 1pm, the police abruptly informed him not to go out through the back door.
It was only then that Mr Cai realised that the air conditioner compressor on the 10th floor was wobbling precariously.
From Mr Cai’s observations, the police had taken out the blockade line and cordoned off the back section of the building. Since the police were worried that the air conditioner compressor would fall from a tall height, they warned the residents about the danger.
Mr Cai also revealed that the residents rarely passed through the back area. Even if they did, they wouldn’t have noticed the air conditioner compressor because it was located on the 10th floor.
When Shin Min Daily News reporters arrived at the scene, the wobbling air conditioner unit had already been removed, and there were policemen going in and out of the apartment unit.

The Right of Intervention
Some might be asking: how did an air conditioner unit fall into this state of disrepair without the tenants noticing?
Singapore can be a sauna at times and cooling air from the air-conditioner is practically a luxury, after all.
According to a nearby neighbour named Sapia (transliterated), they said that a 70-year-old couple lived in the unit, but they were seldom at home.
It’s believed that the elderly couple have other residences. During the three-year-long pandemic, the 69-year-old retiree recounts that they hardly ever see the couple.
Some time ago, there was even a cleaner that came knocking on his door, asking him if the couple was at home.
Sapia is of the opinion that it was the cleaner who alerted the police, hence why they came over to resolve the problem.
He also mentioned that because there was no one at home, the police decided to call a locksmith to gain entry.
The police’s action might sound illegal, but it’s not.

If the problem jeopardises the residents’ safety, the police can enact the right to enter the house by forceful means.
