Even though most of us probably wouldn’t peg a supermarket as a dangerous place for us to be at, unexpected things do happen at times when we least expect them to.
By now, you might have heard about the recent molestation case at Sheng Shiong, where an elderly man groped the buttock of a woman who was buying her groceries.
On 22 April, Facebook user Siti Mariam took to Facebook to document the unpleasant experience she had at a Sheng Shiong supermarket in Bukit Batok.
The incident took place at the Sheng Siong outlet that was located at Block 154A Bukit Batok West Avenue 8 on 21 April.
According to Madam Mariam, she was at the dry goods section of the Sheng Siong supermarket when she suddenly felt “a hand [cup] and [brush] up her butt”.
Describing the action as an “intentional caress”, Madam Mariam claimed that it lasted for “a good two seconds”.
Upon turning around to see who had groped her, she was faced with an elderly masked man who was “grinning back” at her. She said that she “could see his crow lines scrunched up distinctively”, confirming the fact that he was grinning.
Like anyone would, Madam Mariam instantly yelled at the culprit to ask what he was doing.
She also brought her hand up and attempted to slap him, but hit his phone instead.
She then told him that she would be calling the police.
Sheng Shiong Staff Stepped in to Help Catch Culprit
After Madam Mariam found out about his actions, the elderly man was left shocked and tried to escape the scene.
However, Madam Mariam chased after him and screamed for help as well.
She was able to grab him by the collar briefly, but the man was able to flee to the nearby carpark after that.
Even though Madam Mariam lost sight of him after he fled, there were three Sheng Siong employees who were chasing after him by this time.
Thankfully they were able to stop him and catch him before the police arrived, preventing him from escaping further.
When the police arrested the man, who is 66 years old, he confessed to molesting Madam Mariam on purpose.
His reason? He said that he “felt like molesting today, and so he did”.
The CCTV in the supermarket also filmed his actions.

Madam Mariam also mentioned that she wishes for her own sharing to encourage fellow victims to seek help, reducing the amount of fear that they feel when faced with such circumstances.
Additionally, she praised the staff of the Sheng Siong outlet for their actions, and said that the man would not have been caught without their aid.
