When the government announced last year that they would be giving out $100 worth of tourism vouchers to Singaporeans, we couldn’t believe our luck.
Wait, you’re going to give me $100 to have a staycation? Is this the real life?
It’s fair to say that the SingapoRediscovers scheme has proved to be rather popular with Singaporeans, as we love nothing more than free gifts.
It may therefore come as a surprise to you that quite a sizeable number of Singaporeans have yet to redeem their vouchers.
And by a sizeable number, I mean half.
Only Less Than Half of S’pore Population Have Redeemed Their SingapoRediscovers Vouchers
We have less than two months to go before the redemption deadline, but over half of the Singaporean population have not yet redeemed their SingapoRediscovers Vouchers, according to Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong.
In total, around 2.96 million vouchers were distributed to the population. As of 21 Oct, 1.25 million Singaporeans have redeemed their vouchers at least once since the scheme kicked in on 1 Dec last year.
“Collectively, about S$256 million in vouchers and additional expenditure have been spent under the scheme,” Mr Gan said in response to a parliamentary question yesterday (2 Nov).
Another Deadline Extension?
The redemption deadline was originally set for 30 June this year, but was later extended to 31 Dec 2021. One of the reasons cited was to reduce crowding in the last couple of months.
If a large chunk of the population puts off using their vouchers at the last minute, crowds would form at hotels and attractions.
As Minister of State for Trade and Industry Alvin Tan said at the time, “It is opportune because it allows Singaporeans to space out visits to all of the different attractions in the midst of the pandemic to reduce unnecessary crowding.”
As for whether this deadline will be extended once more, Mr Gan said that the authorities will continue to monitor the situation before making a decision.
Don’t Want To Use Them? Donate Them Instead
If you have no use for these vouchers, you don’t have to let them sit in your drawer and collect dust like your luggage bags.
Instead, you could donate to Klook Cares, an initiative comprising many non-profit organisations which aim to help underprivileged families and migrant workers in Singapore.
Tap here to find out about the 10 ways you can donate your SingapoRediscover vouchers to make someone else’s day!
The last thing we’d want to do is let a free gift go to waste.
