Remember the High-Speed Rail (HSR) link between Singapore and Malaysia? Now we’ve got better news for you. Soon, you might even be able to take a direct train to Bangkok.

KL-Bangkok high-speed rail link

Malaysia and Thailand have collaborated to study the possibility of a high-speed rail (HSR) link between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and his Thai counterpart General Prayut Chan-o-ch agreed on the need to set in motion the initial study which would complement the proposed Kuala Lumpur-Singapore HSR.

Through the meeting, Mr Najib stated that they believe in increasing the connectivity for the benefit of people-to-people relations. While they do have a lot of things going for them, the meeting keeps the momentum going for them.

However, Mr Najib cautioned that in order to increase connectivity between Thailand and Malaysia, peace and stability must be achieved especially in southern Thailand.

Both leaders have also agreed for the relevant agencies to explore ways and means to achieve bilateral trade of US$30 billion (S$40.8 billion) by 2018. These includes to speed up infrastructure development projects to promote connectivity in border areas, the bridge construction between Golok and Rantau Panjang, and between Tak Bai and Pengkalan Kubor.

Mr Prayut in his remarks thanked Najib for Malaysia’s role in facilitating the ongoing peace dialogue between relevant parties, while Thailand will continue the peace dialogue, which is still in its initial stage, to build confidence.

While the target deadline for the 350km track between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore is in 2026, the HSR between Malaysia and Thailand still has quite a long way to go. Hopefully, the project will carry out. That means more trips to Bangkok without any worries about luggage weight!
