The infamous racist Hwa Chong lady has been charged in court on Friday (18 Jun) for her actions which made the headlines (and many memes) earlier this year.
According to CNA, Tan Beow Hiong’s charges include one count of public nuisance and two counts of knowingly committing an act that is prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony between different religious or racial groups and disturbs or is likely to disturb the public tranquillity.
She will be remanded for two weeks at the Institute of Mental Health for psychiatric evaluation and her case is adjourned till 2 July.
Actions Taken Against Beow Tan So Far
Thankfully, her (ex)employer has removed her from their company and her social media accounts have been taken down.
On 27 April, KF Property Network Pte Ltd, a real estate agency, announced: “Earlier this week, the conduct of an Associate of KF Property Network was brought to our attention.
We will like to advise that the individual in question has been terminated from the company.”
They noted that their company “maintains zero tolerance for hate speech and racism that threatens the foundations on which Singapore is built.”
In addition, Tan’s YouTube channel, which featured 29 videos of harassment. No, it’s not her getting harassed by people, it’s her harassing other races.
In her videos, the middle-aged woman goes around filming mostly Malay or Indian residents going about their day and later pulls a UNO reverse card by accusing them of bothering her in the title.
Some examples include “Indian sexually harassing 56-year-old Chinese lady” and “Malays Harassing Chinese”.
In one of her videos, titled “Malay Man Attempted to Molest Chinese Woman”, the woman repeatedly accuses a man on the train of molesting her even though he was simply sitting down trying to ignore her.
Of course, police investigations were also conducted, which leads to where we are today.
NP Lecturer Fired After Internal Investigation
Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) will soon sack senior lecturer Tan Boon Lee for serious misconduct after videos and anecdotes emerged of Mr Tan passing racist and Islamophobic remarks.
NP charged Mr Tan – an engineering lecturer – with a serious breach of its staff code of conduct after completing their internal investigations.
Now, the polytechnic “is proceeding to terminate his service”.
NP reminded its staff members in a statement to respect cultural, ethnic, and religious differences, and uphold secularity and impartiality at all times.
Trouble began for Mr Tan when he approached an interracial couple on the street and called them a disgrace.
“I have nothing against Indians, but I think it is racist for an Indian to marry a Chinese girl,” Mr Tan said.
“I’ve got nothing against you personally but I think it is racist that an Indian prey on Chinese girls. Prey, as in predatory.”
If anything, he was the predatory one. Turns out, his racist views were not only aired to this couple in public, but to his students in lessons too. What an asshole.
A few days after the first incident, a former NP student who was taught by Mr Tan took to social media to recount an uncomfortable experience she had with him in 2017.
She claimed that on 28 July 2017, Mr Tan used their class to have a “full-on discourse” about Islam.
During the lecture, Mr Tan allegedly displayed certain websites using the projector and brought up tenets of Islam that he disagreed with. She ended up leaving the classroom halfway through the lecture as she was offended by what he said.
