Ex-Business Partner Clarifies Complaints Made by Wang Lei 

Wang Lei’s ex-business partner, Joe, runs a platform that retails luxury goods and branded watches. He worked for Wang Lei for two years before eventually cutting ties with him.

He has since conducted a live stream to answer enquiries about why his team was no longer collaborating with Wang Lei and to clarify accusations made by Wang Lei regarding his team’s unprofessionalism.

Regarding Wang Lei’s complaints about their subpar customer service and logistics, he felt that Wang Lei could be more understanding.

Problems Between the Two Started in France

Problems first occurred on a France trip in 2022, where Wang Lei planned to conduct a live stream selling Bak Kwa for the Chinese New Year season. The itinerary was packed, and the staff had little time to conduct personal errands like shopping.

However, as he had never splurged on trips before, Joe wanted to treat himself on that trip for the hard work he put into the previous live streams conducted for Wang Lei. 

Despite this, he told Wang Lei to continue his live-streaming plans while he went to buy the Rolex watch he wanted to avoid disrupting his schedule. 

Joe also claimed he only went shopping with peace of mind after Wang Lei told him the livestream wasn’t urgent and could be finished within an hour. 

However, Wang Lei soon got upset after Joe’s arranged transport delayed their previously planned schedule, requiring him to end his livestream 15 minutes earlier.

Wang Lei accused Joe of intentionally disrupting his live-streaming plans and even yelled at him in front of his wife and family.

This made Joe feel wronged as he alleged that he could not arrange the transportation at any other time as the agency had already planned other locations for the car.

Despite sending proof of the agency’s messages to Wang Lei, he continued the cold war between him and Joe for the rest of the trip.

Tried to Communicate Grievances to Wang Lei But Got No Response

To communicate the grievances built-up over two years of their partnership, Joe shared that he had sent a long text message to Wang Lei in January 2023. 

He apologised for losing his temper in France and wanted to stop the cold war between them due to how long they had already worked together.

In the past two years of travelling with Wang Lei, Joe had spent more time abroad with him than with his own family and always treated him sincerely. 

No matter what Wang Lei demanded, Joe said he always tried his best to meet his demands. 

In France, Wang Lei’s family had bought items worth more than $20,000, but Joe borne the cost.

Furthermore, in contrast to claims made by Wang Lei about his “stingy” nature, he shared that he did not deduct Wang Lei’s personal salary for the mentioned expenses and even paid for his business class seats. 

He was also willing to buy business class seats for Wang Lei for future trips after observing that profits from the live streams were enough to cover the expenses. 

Moreover, Joe had also spent significant money to support Wang Lei’s live streams without asking him to compensate him. 

In a broadcast conducted in France in August 2022, to help customers receive products earlier and reduce complaints, he allegedly spent $600,000 to hoard the goods, and $300,000 worth of goods was still with him.

While it’s been a year since the France trip, he shared that he was still owed over $1,400,000 but did not complain as he wanted Wang Lei’s broadcasts to go smoothly.

Claimed that Wang Lei Owes His Team Money 

Joe shared that apart from him, Wang Lei’s ex-talent, Amos, was also owed a salary to be paid by Wang Lei. 

Despite all this, he shared that he and his team have patiently waited for Wang Lei to deposit the money due to their strong relationship. 

He even stated that he could bear half of the costs owed if Wang Lei couldn’t repay the full amount.

Furthermore, in the early stages of his partnership with Wang Lei, Wang Lei did not believe in the idea of ​​going abroad for live streaming and dumped most of the expenses on Joe.

Wang Lei became a popular live streamer after his broadcasts selling fish went viral in 2020. His videos often garnered at least 600,000 views, with other videos hitting over 1.2 million views due to his often hilarious and relatable tone.

Hokkien vulgarities were commonplace in his live streams, and his broadcasting style has earned him controversies over the years. 

In 2022, the Malaysian government and Malaysia International Humanitarian Organisation (MHO) submitted a memo to blacklist Wang Lei due to his videos. 

The secretary of MHO claimed that his videos were too obscene and often contained suggestive vulgarities.

In another case, Wang Lei posted clips of himself dancing and singing funeral songs in front of the Eiffel Tower in 2021, earning mixed responses from netizens.

Netizens accused him of disgracing Singapore as he was also seen teaching two locals several Hokkien phrases, some of which included profanities. 

Abusive Actions Common on Livestreams

His signature broadcasting style did not stop after these controversies, with some of his antics crossing the line regarding Amos.

Previously an ex-talent cultivated by Wang Lei, Amos has since seemed to join Joe’s side to become one of his team members.

On top of accusations about Wang Lei’s demanding and unprofessional nature, Joe also shared that Wang Lei frequently abused Amos.

Amos is often spotted in Wang Lei’s live streams and seems to bare the brunt of his “jokes and antics”. He is frequently seen getting disturbed and “abused” by Wang Lei on his live streams. 

However, concerns have since popped up about the abusive actions being more authentic than they seemed. 

In a video uploaded by the YouTube account “王雷柑你拿”, Wang Lei can be spotted slapping Amos and scolding him for seemingly no reason.

As a result, there were constant comments expressing concern over his condition due to Wang Lei’s behaviour.

However, these actions are often dismissed, as Amos usually responds to these concerns jokingly.

Wang Lei has attributed his actions as theatrics merely to amp up his broadcasts’ comedic and shock value. 

However, Joe claimed that these “theatrics” were unnecessary, especially at stages of the livestream where they have already moved on to selling the actual products.

Furthermore, Amos also alleged that he would constantly hurl abusive words at the team whenever his mood was down.

He also often mentioned the crew’s family members in his insults, causing even Amos, who is usually easy-going, to feel upset over his comments.

Accused Joe of Lying

In a response video that garnered even more attention than Joe’s live stream, now racking up 584,000 views, Wang Lei accused Joe of lying about the claims he made.

Unlike Joe’s livestream, Wang Lei’s tone was more aggressive. His speech was littered with various vulgarities and insults towards Joe and his family, despite claiming he was already “holding himself back”.

He didn’t forget to promote the bird’s nest products he was selling and repeatedly interrupted his live stream to sell them. 

Contrary to Joe’s claims of no longer wanting to work with Wang Lei, Wang Lei shared that Joe had requested to work with him multiple times again since February 2023. 

According to Wang Lei, Joe had asked him to help clear stock accumulated by him. 

In reference to his behaviour in France, Wang Lei claimed that he had felt angry over Joe disrupting his livestream, which was more significant due to it being around the peak period of Chinese New Year. 

He also claimed to have cooperated with all of the changes made by Joe regarding the transport and planned schedule and only got upset after finding out that said interruptions were because of Joe’s trip to shop for his Rolex watch. 

He claimed that he yelled at Joe as he had essentially robbed him of the night’s profits due to his unprofessional and selfish behaviour.

Accused Joe and Team of Being Greedy and Unprofessional

Aside from accusing Joe of lying, he also accused his team of being unprofessional and unable to handle simple order numbers. 

Wang Lei shared that the order numbers reported by Joe were reasonable for live streams and emphasised that their team’s incapability produced delayed responses to customer enquiries. 

According to him, he conducted a live stream in November 2022 but found out that customers only received items in April 2023 due to a five-month delay caused by Joe and his team.

As such, he suspected Joe of delaying the delivery of orders on purpose to receive money without actually having to deliver the product. 

Furthermore, Wang Lei felt Joe was greedy and often wanted maximum profits by marking up prices of items sold in live streams at amounts usually way higher than the base price. 

He cited Joe marking up a Maneki-Neko statue from $38 to $98 for one of his live streams.

Dismissed Allegations of Unreasonable Behaviour

On top of accusing Joe and his team of unprofessionalism, Wang Lei dismissed Joe’s accusations of paying for his family’s expenses on trips by showing that they paid for the expenses themselves. 

He also said that Joe would insist on paying whenever his family shops on trips despite him telling Joe to deduct the fees from his personal salary.

While requesting business class seats could seem demanding on his part, Wang Lei alleged that he had only requested business class seats as he knew the flight would take several hours. 

As such, he was concerned about the physical condition of his other family members who were going on the trip. 

Additionally, he emphasised that the request was only a one-time occurrence as he had allegedly withstood discomfort on multiple trips abroad with Joe, where the seats were often cheaper. 

Furthermore, he dismissed Joe’s claims of not wanting to go to Korea with him as he claimed that Joe had gone to Korea multiple times even before their fallout and could essentially move to Korea at the rate he was travelling there.

He also accused Joe of not being transparent with the profits he made from the Korea trip and claimed to have made a police report about the case.

Dismissed Accusations of Gambling Behaviour

While claims have been made of him reverting back to his gambling ways after Joe’s live stream, Wang Lei rebutted the claims and said he was only present at the casino to provide money for his family and Joe to play.

He clarified that he did not join in to gamble.

He also alleged that Joe was the one who was captured in a gambling frenzy at the casino and accused him of damaging his family’s reputation and influencing netizens to insult his family members due to the claims he made against him.

This especially affected his daughter, who stood up for him in the comments under Joe’s previous livestream. 

He further accused Joe of being a bootlicker and an opportunist who always sought to maximise his and his wife’s profits. 

He concluded the stream by insulting Joe and his wife with multiple less-than-polite profanities and even scolded people who still supported Joe.

Says He is the Opposite of Greedy

In response to Wang Lei’s accusation that he was lying by citing his unnatural and nervous tone in his previous live stream, Joe has since explained that the behaviour was because he was not used to conducting live streams.

He also felt especially wronged by Wang Lei’s accusation of him being a bootlicker as he claimed to be sincere in treating him nicely throughout their partnership.

Joe also rebutted Wang Lei’s claims of him keeping profits to himself.

He cited their previous Europe trip, where they lost $10,000. Instead of complaining about the loss, Joe claimed he even cut a higher percentage of the subpar profits to Wang Lei.

Additionally, regarding instances of marked-up prices for products sold in previous live streams, he stated that the markup was necessary to cover expenses that came with the live streams.

Regarding the business class seats, he claimed that he wasn’t being stingy but only deemed it unnecessary, especially in the early days of live streaming, where it was yet to be proved that profits would be enough to cover such expenses. 

However, he soon approved of it once profits proved higher than expected.

Furthermore, he stated that he was not a “fan of Korea” like Wang Lei painted him out to be and only travelled there because of ongoing commitments with stakeholders in the country. 

Supported Further Claims with Evidence

While initially wanting to sever all ties between them, he explained that he still requested to collaborate with Wang Lei after the fallout as he knew viewers who knew of their relationship would still expect them to collaborate for live streams. 

Furthermore, contrary to Wang Lei’s claims of not reverting back to his gambling habits, he shared that casinos were the first thing Wang Lei looked for in each country they visited. 

While he had no evidence of this claim, he implored viewers to consider Wang Lei’s previous gambling history, where he once squandered all his money on gambling.

He said that Wang Lei’s gambling habits would make it impossible for him to sit idly in a casino and alleged that he had joined his family members in gambling.

He further emphasised his intentions to clarify any misinformation Wang Lei may make against him in future and implored viewers to take his words with a grain of salt.
