If you believe in happily-ever-after, you would probably have shed a tear when llaollao announced their comeback.
Or if you are the kind that likes drama, this must be the most talked-about ‘drama’ in the month of December.
Or if you are lost and have no idea what I’m talking about, let me summarise what happened in the past few weeks for you.
- Well-known froyo chain llaollao announced departure from our shores.
- All 29 stores were replaced by “European brand” Yole (FYI pronounced as ‘yo-lay’).
- Former master franchise of llaollao said that Yole is even better.
- In an address to disappointed fans, llaollao draws a line between Yole and themselves.
- Yole has stores in Taiwan only, does not operate in Europe as claimed.
- llaollao is coming back in Q1 of 2018 (not kidding!)
So… llaollao pulled a Gong Cha five days after announcing its closure…
And some netizens are not impressed.
Some thought that it must be another marketing strategy, seeing how the queue for the reopened Gong Cha was quite wild.
Some, on the other hand, were happy to welcome back the chain after its five-day-hiatus.
And there’s more drama to it: both brands started to fire words at each other.
In their Facebook post, llaollao first clarifies that their closure is “disappointing” and a “unilateral decision” made by their former master franchise, D+1 Holding.
When interviewed, the spokesperson of D+1 Holding said that the llaollao menu was “exhausted”.
Yole, on the other hand, promises something new weekly/bi-weekly.
Which D+1 Holdings was impressed with.
“Objectively, we believe Yole is a better product and has a wider menu. We also firmly believe that Yole will suit the Singapore market with exciting flavour innovations and well-known toppings from Spain and Italy.”
I’m not sure about you, but they sound a tad too confident to my liking.
Pedro Espinosa, founder and CEO of llaollao, does not hold back.
He was sure that Yole is a “completely new” player in the market.
He also said that since llaollao is preparing for a comeback, “it is very important for us to untie llaollao from any other frozen yoghurt brand whose quality standards are unknown.”
oooh that burn
Some went to try Yole out and there were mixed reviews about it.
Here’s one that thinks it’s so-so.
And here’s one that likes it.
Personally, taste aside, I’m kinda worried if the whole bye-and-hi will become a frequent thing.
It’s like having your other half leave you suddenly and coming back a few days later as if nothing happened.
I wouldn’t be impressed.
On the other hand, my JC Economics taught me that when there are more players in the market, the prices will be more competitive.
That’s good news for froyo lovers that have no preference.
In the meantime, let’s just sit back and relax while the show airs.
Froyo anyone?
