Typically, when we take public transport, we’d give up our seats to people in need, such as the elderly, pregnant ladies, or disabled people.
Well, what about young children? Do we give up our seats for these hyperactively noisy cute bundles of joy?
Netizens have started a debate on Reddit, and here’s what they have to say.
Netizens Wondering Why People Should Give MRT Seats to Young Children
It all began on 27 November. A user by the handle u/Mainmito posted a question on the r/askSingapore thread on why people give their seats to young children.
He wrote: “I am genuinely curious why do I see people giving up their seats to children (roughly 4-8yo) on MRT when they clearly are able to stand unassisted and easily. I totally get it if I have to give up my seat to a parent carrying a toddler on them. But these children can stand on their own, a 30+ yo person like me is the one who has problems standing up for prolonged periods 😭.”
Viewers all had different responses.
The first group of people was those who criticised him for having no empathy.
Next, there were some who were concerned about his physical state, and some even shared that their sports-related injuries put them in a similar position as him.
Finally, there were some who tried to reason why people would give them the seats, saying that young children have problems balancing on the moving train. Some also pointed out that letting them sit down would make them less noisy in a crowded train.

The Follow-up
After the response, the original poster issued a follow-up statement saying that he finally understood why people gave up their seats.
He wrote: “If I stand for long I get tired, still can stand but just tired, thanks for the concern everyone haha. And wow so many angry sg redditors, I only ask because I want to know why and mean no malice but many people see malice in my question. I don’t have kids so I don’t understand also but now I do and I will definitely give up my seat to them. Will not reply to these angry comments calling me insensitive, entitled, ask me take grab instead of mrt etc because I will cmf get downvoted to oblivion. Thanks for the answer reddit.”
Even after the clarifications, people are still divided.
