Remember this guy?

Well, guess what? He’s sprung to life! And where better than Dubai to spawn such a cool-looking technological phenomenon?

“Because, you know, Dubai is where all the weird shit happens” – Boon Hun 2k17

Okay, okay, the Robocop doesn’t exactly look like the one above. I mean, it’s a robot and all…

But it doesn’t exactly look…

Yeah, you get what I mean. And wait till you see the bottom half. I know my mum always told me not to judge things by their outlook, but seriously.

What the heck is that? If you didn’t tell me it was a robot police, I would have thought, “Wow, that’s pretty futuristic for a floor-cleaning robot!”

But I digress; the point of this article isn’t to shame robots. Sorry, Robocop. I still love you.

First robotic cop joins Dubai Police

Dubai hass always been pretty futuristic. And weird.

For one they brought in Lambos and Ferraris to patrol the road. You know, that’s like, the first time I would volunteer to do patrol. Because the last time I did I was trekking through a forest with my M16.

And now, according to Telegraph, they have ‘enrolled’ a robotic officer. And it’s just the first of many to come. They aim to have enough robots to make up 25% of the entire police force by 2030.

What makes this RoboCop…a RoboCop?

The robot has got a series of pretty interesting features.

It stands at 5 ft 5 inches tall, weighs 100 kg, speaks six languages and is programmed to study facial expressions. (I wonder what would happen if I start to leer at it, but never mind)

It’s got a built-in computer touchscreen on its chest, and it can be used to report a crime or ‘ask’ about speeding tickets. It also has a camera that sends live images to the operations room, and is able to pick out wanted suspects.

Wow, sounds familiar to me.

SGSecure, anyone?

Why was it built?

Head of Smart Services at Dubai Police, Brigadier Khaled al-Razzooqi, said that the main purpose of the RoboCop is to “find a new way to deal with people.”

Well, sounds legitimate.

I can see 101 reasons how that could go wrong in the future though, but don’t mind me. It’s just my Terminator fanatic experiences acting up.

The ‘cute’ RoboCop will be deployed at Dubai’s tourist spots.

Thoughts

Aside from the possibility that the robots might turn on us (Siri starts sending jump scares on your phone), we also have to recognize another impending threat.

They are taking our jobs.

Just look at the self check-out kiosks at supermarkets, selection kiosks at fast food restaurants and now this.

They are taking our jobs.

So the important question now is: should you still be complaining about foreign talents, or start to worry about something much more sinister?

And more importantly, isn’t it about time to think how you can survive this robo-calypse? They don’t kill you. They kill your rice bowl.

Hint: SkillsFuture 😉
