There’s no way anyone has ever not used Google Drive before. It’s simply one of the best things Google has come up with.
Apart from Google Chrome, that is.
And Android, that is.
And Gmail, that is.
And…okay, you get the idea. Google is the boss.
But lately, there’s been a buzz online. Google is apparently in the works of killing off its Google Drive app, and replacing it with two other apps.
WTH, Google? You sure you’re making the right move? Aw, but we love Drive!
Well, here’s 10 things you’d really wanna know about the upcoming demise of Google Drive. RIP, buddy.
You’ll Be Getting Notified Soon
Users of Google Drive will start receiving messages on the replacements from next month onwards. Keep an eye, y’all.
When It Stops Working
The desktop app version won’t function from March next year (2018) onwards. Damn. I need a tissue right now.
The Target Group for the New App
The new app is designed for public users of Google Drive. But wait, what about the rest of the world?
As for Business Users…
Google has not forgotten you guys lah. They’ve, in fact, created an upgrade to drive, known as the Drive File Stream application. This app will have a host of features, including streaming files from cloud without having the need to store them on your desktop!
What’s the Name of the Other App?
Well, the name of the app for public users is simply Backup and Sync. It has pretty much the same functionality as Google Drive for desktop. Backup and Sync is also going to work the new level for Google Photos Uploader.
That’s two strikes with one stone, ladies and gents.
What Happens to Your Cloud Storage?
Thankfully, it’s unaffected by the death of Google Drive. It can still be accessed online, via your smartphone or the soon to be released Backup and Sync.
When Will Support for Google Drive stop?
Well, if you need help with your Google Drive app, chances are you’ll be able to get some until 11th December 2017. After that, you’re on your own.
What About the Automatic Syncing of your Files?
That’s bound to stop soon, too. 12 March 2018 to be exact!
How About Legacy Applications?
There’s not been any clear indication as to whether you’d be able to connect to your Google Drive account after its expiry, of if Google is going to cut all ties ASAP.
When is the Best Time to Update to Backup and Sync?
Google’s already been suggesting that its user switch to the new app to avoid any lagging thanks to the change of its modus operandi when the new update’s up and running!
Sounds like it’s going to be a switch, but with the same features as well as some major facelifts too. There’s only one way to go from here, and it’s with the new apps. Whichever is your designated choice, we hope it works to fulfil your needs!
So, don’t worry: Google Drive is dying but its successor will be much better. You can check out how it works here, but simply put, it’s more of an upgrade and a name change.
