In this week’s episode of Why I’m losing my faith in humanity, a group of friends have assaulted a 19-year-old boy with low intelligence quotient (IQ), leaving him with serious injuries like chemical burns and amnesia.
What’s worse is that the 16-year-old assailant among them also urinated in a bottle of iced lemon tea, which her fellow accomplice then made the victim drink.
How This Inexorable Act Came About
The victim had studied at APSN Delta Senior School, where he became acquainted with one of the two 16-year-old assailants. Their identities cannot be disclosed as they are protected under the Children and Young Persons Act.
Through her, he got to know Muhammad Shahfakhry Mohamad Faizal, a 21-year-old man who was the third person involved in the attack.
The last accomplice, Putri Nuramira Aishah Rosli, is a 19-year-old who had not known the victim prior to the incident. She is presumed to be a friend of the other three.
The week-long abuse occurred earlier this year, on 15 January, where Shahfakhry and two of the teenage girls allegedly started consuming illicit drugs in a Arton Boutique Hotel room located along Jalan Besar. One drug they consumed was methamphetamine, colloquially known as “crystal meth”, a Class A controlled drug in Singapore.
The 16-year-old female whom he had known from school then invited him to stay with them, so he joined the trio two days later.
Shahfakhry then allegedly began slapping, kicking him, and punching the victim, while the 16-year-old female offender who extended the invite to him also slapped and kicked him on his head a few times.
What was the purported reason for this? She had told Shahfakhry that the victim wanted to have sex with her without her consent, though this remains unconfirmed.
The other 16-year-old female filmed down the entire violent incident.
Two days later, the 16-year-old batterer asked the victim to leave the toilet as he was showering. She then proceeded to enter the toilet and urinate into an empty bottle of iced lemon tea, before coming out and handing it to the victim.
Shahfakhry then clarified with her what the bottle’s contents were before asking the victim to consume it. The victim complied.
Between the dates of 17 and 25 January, the cold-blooded trio continued to abuse him with “various implements and methods”, according to court documents. The more dreadful part is that some of these abusive incidents were recorded down.
Attackers Made Fruitless Attempts to Treat the Victim
On the last day of the attack, 25 January, the group stopped hitting the 19-year-old after noticing that he was in a bad state. They then bought some medication and bandages to treat his wounds.
How they really thought that playing doctor was going to magically going to undo the 7 days of brutal abuse they inflicted on him, is beyond me.
Anyway, when found, the victim was assessed to be in a critical condition and taken to Singapore General Hospital.
He was then hospitalised until 4 February, where doctors had to give him nutritional support because of his limited mouth opening and acute stress reaction.
He had sustained the following injuries from the attack:
- Chemical burns to his scalp, face and back
- Multiple superficial injuries such as slash wounds, lacerations, cigarette butt burns, and multiple cuts on his upper and lower limbs
- Orbital floor fractures
- Amnesia with possible traumatic brain injury
Victim’s Social Worker and Sister Called the Police to Find Him
Upon realising that the victim suddenly disappeared from his home two weeks ago, the victim’s social worker made a police report on 25 January. She added that he was discharged two months ago from the Singapore Boys’ Home and stayed home every day.
“He did not pack anything, phone is turned off. Last known from phone app to be at Lavender. Said he was going to friend’s house at Woodlands around 8pm to 9pm and coming back the next day,” she told the police.
The victim’s younger sister had seen a photo on social media of someone who was badly injured and it appeared to be her brother. She too, made a police report following this appalling discovery.
On 26 January, the police found the group and the victim in the hotel room.
Consequences for the Cruel Act
The 16-year-old offender who had made the victim consume her urine was the first of the group to be sentenced. She pleaded guilty to one count each of drug consumption, voluntarily causing hurt, and mischief.
For her actions, she was ordered yesterday (26 July) to undergo at least 12 months of reformative training. This is a regimented rehabilitation programme for offenders under 21 who commit relatively serious crimes.
Putri Nuramira Aishah Rosli, the 19-year-old involved also pleaded guilty but has not been sentenced yet.
Shahfakhry and the other 16-year old have since been charged.
