Being old doesn’t mean that you’re above the law, contrary to what this 91-year-old mother thought.
A 65-year-old retired lecturer who lives with her 91-year-old mother has been suffering from physical abuse for the past six years. This includes being slapped, having her hair pulled, and being beaten with crutches, landing her in the hospital multiple times.
Instead of simply getting another personal protection order, the court approved for the daughter to live elsewhere for the next two years.
Here’s how the situation escalated.
Violently Abused Since 2016
The retired lecturer was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2002, with impaired memory and learning difficulties.
Despite this, she was a polytechnic lecturer and substitute teacher till her retirement in 2016. She lives in a five-room HDB flat with her 91-year-old mother.
Ever since retirement, she has been violently abused by her mother. Once, her mother hit her with a feather duster till the feather duster broke, which was when she decided to apply for a personal protection order.
Repeatedly Violated Protection Order
Although she successfully obtained a protection order, her mother continued to abuse her.
In fact, she reportedly violated the order six times in 2017 alone. In January 2019, her mother punched her in the eyes and nose because she accidentally bought the wrong type of potatoes, causing her nose to bleed.
After being discharged from the hospital, the daughter was placed in a shelter temporarily. However, she returned home in March 2019, when the abuse continued.
The personal protection order was violated four times in 2019, and the mother was given a severe warning in 2020.
Hospitalised for Insomnia, Mother Bit Security Guard
In August 2021, the daughter was admitted to the hospital for insomnia.
The abuse continued even in the hospital, where hospital staff saw the mother beating and scolding her daughter, even trying to pull out the IV drip.
In November 2021, the mother pushed her daughter’s head twice, and tried to steal her daughter’s mobile phone.
When a hospital security guard was sent to escort the elderly woman out of the hospital, the mother even tried to bite the security guard.
This was the last straw, as the director of social welfare services stepped in to make a court application under the Vulnerable Adults Act. The judge granted the application, which would allow the daughter to live elsewhere for two years.
Thought She Won’t Get Into Trouble Because She’s Old
The 91-year-old mother was subsequently diagnosed with an emotional disorder.
She reportedly told Adult Protective Services that because of her age, she didn’t think law enforcement would take action against her.

“I’m Not Wrong”
The mother insisted that her actions weren’t wrong.
Her reasoning? Her abuse was simply a mother’s job of disciplining her children.
The elderly mother said that the world was a terrible place, which was why she forbids her daughter from going out alone in case she was raped or murdered.
Holding the key to the house, the mother accompanies the daughter to buy daily necessities or go to the library. Any other places are not allowed.
This caused her daughter to feel lonely and disconnected, which led to her developing insomnia.
Hopefully, the daughter will be able to find a safe place to live after this ordeal.
