It’s terrible to be the bearer of bad news.
Ah Seah Teochew Porridge, a restaurant that has faithfully served its customers at Teck Chye Terrace, Hougang, for 58 years, has just announced that it will be ceasing its operations on 19 June 2022.
The Facebook Announcement
On Thursday (26 May), the owners of Ah Seah Teochew Porridge declared that they were “closing the shutters” of their long-standing restaurant.
While they didn’t elaborate on the reasons as to why they came to this decision, they were nonetheless grateful towards their loyal and faithful patrons.
They sincerely thanked their customers for their support through the highs and lows, and were appreciative of the friends they made along the way.
It must have been hard, but they confirmed in their Facebook post that their last business day would fall on Sunday, 19 June 2022.
Although it is stated in the post that they look forward to the day that they will serve their customers again, it’s unknown whether they will open a new restaurant elsewhere, go for a pop-up stall concept, or try a different endeavour altogether to bring back their classic recipes.

Ah Seah Teochew Porridge’s Legacy
If you’re curious about Ah Seah Teochew Porridge, they are best known for what is already stated in their restaurant’s name: their traditional Teochew Porridge.
Besides that, they also serve braised duck, steamed pomfret, stir-fried eggplants and a large variety of dishes, just like your typical mixed vegetable rice store.
According to Roots, a government website that meticulously records Singapore’s diverse culture and history, the restaurant is family-run, and has been “a well-loved staple in the Teochew enclave since the 1960s”.
Its first store was set up in the former Lim Tua Tow market in 1964—making it a year older than Singapore—before it relocated several times and eventually settled at Teck Chye Terrace.
It is currently being run by the second generation.
If you’re interested in the wide array of dishes the restaurant offers, go back to taste an old-time favourite, or simply to offer some support as a last hurrah, the details of the restaurant are listed below:

It’s a pity to see a local restaurant close down after nearly six decades of business, but it does seem like an unfortunate trend that we’re witnessing these days.
Hopefully, they will open for business again, someday.
Regardless, to the family who own Ah Seah Teochew Porridge, may you find success in your future endeavours.
Thank you for your years of tireless service.
