Today, we were shocked by a piece of news that shook not just Singapore, but the whole world as well. McDonald’s Singapore is selling salted egg yolk fries from tomorrow (3 January 2019) onwards. And on another news, a lizard has decided to take a swim and kena deep fried. It allegedly even landed inside an IRVINS Salted Egg package, and looks just as crispy as rendang chicken. IRVINS has since issued a statement, and let’s just say that they’ve gained more fans with how they handle this PR crisis. IRVINS Apologizes & Even Reported It to AVA Themselves When shit like this hit the fan, you can expect netizens to say something along this line: But when a business takes full responsibility, and even reports its own product to the authorities, you know they’re serious about their apology. Less than a day after the image went viral, IRVINS posted this in their Facebook Page: Lest you can’t read the words, here’s what they’ve written: Dear Customers, Fans, Friends & Partners of IRVINS Salted Egg, All of us at IRVINS Salted Egg were very shocked and devastated to hear that one of our customers discovered a dead lizard in a snack pouch that she opened. Quality control is one of the most important aspects of our company and we are always on our toes because our customers’ safety is everything to us. We really want to sincerely apologize to the customer and everyone who is affected by this incident directly or indirectly. We take full responsibility for the goods that we sell and everything in it. I have since personally contacted the customer and will continue to do so to make sure that she and her family is alright. We promise to investigate this further as we don’t have a full explanation on how the dead lizard ended up in our snack pouch and we promise to make the necessary changes in our production to ensure this will never happen again. The case has been reported to AVA and we will cooperate with them fully. For all of our customers who still have our salted egg snacks at home, please kindly check on the back of the pouch for the expiry date. If you have a snack pouch that expires on 16 October 2019 or if you are uncomfortable with consuming our snacks, kindly email us at feedback@irvinsaltedegg.com so that our Customer Experience team could assist you with the product recall and refunds required for the snacks. All recalled products would be disposed of. This is a major blow to us, however we promise that we will fix this issue and continue to be an honest and responsible company to all of you. No, in fact, if you just feel uncomfortable consuming their products, simply contact them. Now that’s what I call professionalism. IRVINS Salted Egg, the Business That Started From Demand Lest you’re not aware, IRVINS Salted Egg is started by none other than Irvin Gunawan, a 32-year-old Indonesian-born entrepreneur. It all started out when he sold the snacks in a typical CNY style in his restaurant, and when demand for the snacks increased, it became a business instead. In other words, it’s born out from demand and now, it has even gone global, with the brand appearing in a SCMP video. I don’t know about you, but I’m dying for some IRVINS salted egg fish skin now—though I’ll be sure to check that the expiry date isn’t 16 October 2019.
