Things are getting heated as Biden emerges again to warn that Ukraine is in danger.

According to the New York Times on 18 February, US President Joe Biden said that the United States has intelligence showing that the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has decided to reject diplomatic methods and invade Ukraine.

Calling it a “catastrophic and needless war of choice,” Biden claims that they have reasons to believe that Russian forces have plans and intentions to attack Ukraine by targeting the capital, Kyiv, which has a population of 2.8 million people.

Biden’s Stance on Putin’s Alleged Decision

US President Biden remains convinced that Putin had made up his mind as this decision was based on “a significant intelligence capability”.

Despite this, Biden implored Russia to “choose diplomacy” and hopes that the situation can be de-escalated in reference to the planned talks between the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, and Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, on Thursday.

Should any military action be taken by Russia before the meeting, the President of the United States claims that it’s a clear act that Russia has “slammed the door shut on diplomacy.”

Developing Situation in Ukraine

Hours before Biden’s press conference, mass evacuations were called in within two regions – the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk – where women, children, and the elderly will be evacuated to Russia.

Both areas are occupied by Russian-back separatists where they blamed Ukraine for a slew of provocations which includes shelling along the front lines between Ukraine and the separatist forces, and the explosion of an empty car that belonged to the head of the region’s security services.

The evacuation was prompted by claims that Ukraine’s military had intentions to launch a large-scale attack in the area – an action that appeared to provoke Russian military intervention.

However, the above-mentioned events were put down by Biden as Russia’s attempt to justify military action within Ukraine with misinformation.

Head of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence, Oleksiy Reznikov, has also refuted claims of a brewing attack made by its military and dubbed that the information was spread with the intention to inflame tensions. Instead, the ministry has issued a warning for residents within contested regions to stay at home and avoid using public transport as they had “information that Russian special services have mined a number of social infrastructure facilities in Donetsk,” with intentions of “destablilising the situation” there.

Further Information Behind Biden’s Claims

While Biden continues to remain mum on how the administration knew about Putin’s alleged decision to invade Ukraine, two US officials stepped up to clarify that the president’s assessment was based on new intelligence showing nearly half of the 150,000 Russian forces have moved into combat formation, allowing them to launch a full-scale invasion within days.

Mr. Putin, however, has said that he was open for further diplomacy on Friday.
