You Can Eat the Skin of This Banana. Serious.

What’s the first thing you should do when eating a banana?

Logically, you would peel off the skin, right? And no, I’m not here to talk or debate about the right way to peel a banana. In fact, no peeling will be involved!

Meet, the Mongee(Mon-gay) banana.

Yeah, it looks just like a regular banana. Please don’t tell me you’re expecting something weird just because it has edible skin!

As much as we would like to buy the banana for a taste test, we soon came to realize that it isn’t very possible.

Apparently, the Mongee banana is so rare that only 10 bananas go on sale at departmental store Tenmanya Okayama every week. The Mongee banana is grown by D&T farm in Okayama prefecture of Japan.

Yikes, and I was still hoping for one of our local markets to import the banana…

“Guess I should try my luck when I go to Japan!” thought the writer, right before he saw the price tag.

‎¥648(S$7.68) for a banana.

Well…it’s definitely not cheap. However, considering how a pair of Yubari melons actually went for $23,500 in Japan, I guess S$7.68 is nothing in comparison, eh?

According to soranews24, farmers from D&T uses a method called “Freeze Thaw Awakening”, extracting and implementing the DNA of fruits in order to produce specimen similar to ancient times. The method allows the fruit to grow in a cooler climate.

The team from soranews24 tried eating the skin of the banana and found that it is relatively easy to eat. The skin of the banana is very thin and has no strange texture.

Most importantly, there isn’t much flavour to the skin. Which is a good thing, in my opinion, since it wouldn’t affect the taste of the banana!

Welp, I guess I’ll buy one of these bananas if I ever get the chance to! I hope the banana wouldn’t spoil if I attempt to ship it back to Singapore though…

Since you’re here, why not watch a video about a guy who lodged a Police report here in Singapore because he was friendzoned? Seriously. Here, watch it and do remember to share it (and also subscribe to Goody Feed YouTube channel)!
