Working in showbiz can be tough, especially if you’re an actor.
According to a 2019 study by Queen Mary University of London, only 2% of actors make a living from the profession.
Moreover, 90% are out of work at any one time.
And even if you do manage to land some jobs, they may be minor roles in a show you don’t even like.
In some instances, you’ll have to slog away for decades before you can get the role you desire.
And that’s exactly what one Korean-American actor had to do.
Daniel Dae Kim Gets First Leading Role After 31 Years in the Industry
After 31 years of working in television, Daniel Dae Kim has finally landed his first lead role.
Variety reported that the 52-year-old will star in The Hot Zone: Anthrax, an anthology series on the National Geographic Channel.
It is the second season of National Geographic’s “The Hot Zone”.
The first season, starring Julianna Marguiles, was National Geographic’s most-watched scripted series of all-time, according to Screen Rant.
The series is based on the anonymous bioterror attacks that caused panic in the US weeks after the September 11 attacks.
Kim will play Matthew Ryker, an FBI agent who specialises in microbiology.
The 52-year-old actor announced the good news on Twitter, though he played down its importance.
Hardly the biggest news given what’s going on in the world today,
But after 31 years of working in TV, this is my first series lead. https://t.co/Z6IuoWL0f7— Daniel Dae Kim (@danieldaekim) January 13, 2021
Most of us know Kim from Lost, but he’s also known for his work in Hawaii Five-0 and Angel.
Looks Like a Certain Singapore Minister
Last year, the 52-year-old announced he had contracted Covid-19 in a post on Instagram.
Singaporeans who stumbled upon the video must have thought: Wah, our education minister (then) has Covid-19? And when did he get such a chiseled jawline?
Some netizens have noticed a resemblance between the Korean-American actor and the Sembawang MP.
Fortunately, our Transport Minister (then Education Minister) did not contract the coronavirus, and Kim recovered from the illness 10 days after publicly revealing he had tested positive for it.
While it seemed mild at first, it eventually overwhelmed him.
“This disease is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced,” he said.
“So, the day after my last video, my course of treatment ended. I was feeling healthier, as I mentioned, and I thought it would be good to just let my immune system take charge the rest of the way.”
“But, maybe I was a bit too confident. A day after, I started to feel sluggish, tired. I was still congested and weirdly I lost my sense of smell, which led to a loss of sense of taste.”
Less than a year after his coronavirus scare, Kim now has a new lead role to look forward to.
While a premiere date for his new show has yet to be announced, filming is expected to begin later this year.
