This Dog That Understands Hokkien Commands Will Melt Your Heart

Look, it’s really difficult to convince someone that a dog isn’t cute. No matter how hard you try, people will always look past their physical appearance and see the good in them. (Can’t say the same for humans, but that’s a topic for another time)

And when dogs are capable of something unique, like singing or dancing—it will usually melt hearts and perhaps make that heartless colleague of yours go “D’awww”, giving you the perfect chance to stab him/her in the back at work.

*Ahem* Anyway, as you would expect, we will be talking about such a doggo today! Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Button the doggo:

Therapy dog trained in Hokkien brings cheer

Meet Button, the therapy dog that can obey commands in Hokkien. http://str.sg/oiEq

Her cuteness aside, Button’s Hokkien proficiency will most likely make you go “bow wow!”(sorry not sorry). I’m fairly certain she knows more Hokkien than most grandchildren these days.

Which explains why some elderly always appear so lonely even when they’re being surrounded by their loved ones during Lunar New Year (sigh).

Seriously though, Button keeping the elderly company is what that truly melted my heart. God knows the elderly living in a Hospice could use more company and it’s like what Mr. Lee Kwok Choo said:

“So it’s like one of my children lah, in this way”

Before you guys start arguing about how dogs do not actually understand the human language, please lah! Can we just appreciate the fact that Button is doing much more than what some people are willing to do for their parents these days?

As seen from the video, Button is capable of following quite a good number of commands in Hokkien:

According to Miss Fiona Foo, the Founder of Hope Dog Rescue, “The fact that she understands Hokkien is quite an icebreaker with the patients. They will start talking to her in Hokkien and then they start smiling and laughing”.

Well, even I’m smiling at this very moment. I sure hope the elderly enjoyed Button’s companionship!

And as usual, let’s take a look at the comments section:

Well, it would appear that most people have nothing but praises for Button! No matter if you’re a dog lover or not, I’m sure you can give Button a thumbs up for her hard work, no?

Oh and, here’s an obligatory mention of the fact that it’s the year of the canine this year in case you were expecting me to start or end the article with it.
