You’ve heard of overly attached girlfriends.
But how about overly attached boyfriends?
Indeed, this notion was thrown into play on 4 June 2017, when a 53-year-old reportedly stabbed his girlfriend of 18 years in the throat with a letter opener.
What exactly happened?
The incident had occurred at a Bedok North Housing and Development Board (HDB) block on 4 Jun, 2017, at around 10:00 a.m.
The man, Lim Kok Beng, 53, had been staying with the victim, Ms Liaw Bih Jiuan, 43, and his mother in the flat during the time of the incident.
In May, Ms Liaw had wanted to break up, thereby ending their relationship. But the matter wasn’t resolved.
On 4 June, Ms Liaw brought up the issue again when she returned home at around 2:00 a.m.
Three hours later, at around 5:00 a.m., Lim told Ms Liaw that he wasn’t feeling well, and left their room to search for his mother.
He returned shortly, locked the door after him and woke Ms Liaw up, saying that he wanted to talk to her.
Ms Liaw didn’t entertain him, and made to leave the room.
Lim, evidently enraged, used his hands to choke her, and the two fell onto the floor after a quick struggle. She shouted for help, but Lim grabbed her neck in an arm lock and continued strangling her.
Lim’s mother overhead the whole process, and tried to unlock the door. However, Lim blocked her from entering. That was when Ms Liaw escaped to the living room in an attempt to call her family members.
As Ms Liaw messaged friends, asking for them to pick her up, Lim caught up and pleaded with her not to leave or dial the Police.
She then spotted something in his pocket and asked what it was. Lim’s mother stepped forward to feel it, and realised it was a knife.
Upon hearing that, Ms Liaw fled out of the flat and was chased by Lim, who took her arm, telling her not to go.
He subsequently withdrew a 10cm-long letter opener and stabbed her in the neck.
Somehow, she managed to grab it and broke it, before throwing it away.
Lim, undeterred, grabbed her head and hit it twice with a brick.
His mother stepped in, and Ms Liaw took the chance to head to the ninth floor, where she asked for help from a neighbour. The police were quickly called in.
The victim was thereafter hospitalized for six days.
Sentence
Lim was sentenced on 31 Oct 2017 to 27 months’ jail, according to the Straits Times.
He could have been jailed for up to seven years, and fined.
Well, that was one hell of an overly-attached boyfriend.
We sincerely hope that Ms Liaw would get over any sustained traumas, because being stabbed in the neck by your loved one must suck. Real bad.
On another note, ladies, make sure your significant other is devoid of any letter openers.
Not suggesting anything, but just… gotta make sure, you know.
