The Chang Cheng stall in the Kopitiam found in Kang Kar Mall has raised prices of food by $2.

There was a notice at the stall that read:“Dear customers, from 3pm onwards on CNY’s Eve (15.02.18) till 3rd day of CNY (18.02.18), the selling price for all food items will be increased by $2.00″

According to Channel 8 News, Chang Cheng Group did not announce the change on their Facebook Page.

A spokesperson for Kopitiam said that it was a nationwide adjustment across all Chang Cheng stalls and has received permission from Kopitiam.

Kopitiam

Well, not only Chang Cheng is doing this.

Another netizen found that a beverage stall in a Kopitiam collected an additional 20 cents.

It is known that Kopitiam allows tenants to raise prices (between $0.50 to $2.00) during CNY, given that they apply for it and receives approval.

Toastbox

Toastbox charged an additional 10%.

What netizens say

There are only two teams in this whole ‘Chang Cheng raise price’ issue: you either support, or you bash.

Let’s take a look at what #teambash has to say:

“Honestly you are the one who decided to come out and operate during CNY, why are you adding the burden onto customers?”

“Justifiable or not depends on each individual…it’s not like there’s only one stall…there are still a lot of choices…we also can’t say that they are wrong…it depends on each person’s willingness…you can’t say that you have no choice…I don’t think it’s nice until need to pay extra $2…it’s just a normal cai png…can the boss wake up…”

And #teamsupport fights back:

“Price of haircut also increased a few days before CNY, then why can’t hawker stalls increase their price too? We don’t see anyone raving about how unfair it was for the price of haircut to increase. Business is like this, so many stalls didn’t open, price increase is inevitable. Furthermore, they did put up a notice, if you don’t want to pay then you don’t eat. I believe that the stall owners aren’t that cold-blooded to not treat needy elderly to a meal. There’s lots of things going on behind the scenes, don’t accuse a stall for ‘daylight robbery’ if all they did was to raise prices for a few days. It’s already better than a stall that chooses not to operate at all.”

“This is also not charity. They are sacrificing their break to operate. Everyone happily go on holiday but they are still busy at work. If it’s you, you will also increase price right~they are not telling you to eat. Nobody is forcing you. Totally speechless.”

Personally, I’m standing with #teamsupport.

I don’t celebrate CNY and I don’t cook, so you can guess how much I dread CNY (in terms of having to go out and buy food but there are no stalls opened).

But it’s still pretty understandable lah, maybe they can justify how the $2 is calculated and people might start to see things from a different perspective.

Anyways, it’s nice knowing that there are people that understand where these businesses are coming from.

I mean, there’s no need to make things difficult for everyone right?

It’s simple demand and supply. But it’s really heartening to see #teamsupport out there, because let’s face it: these people who work during CNY are sacrificing time just so that you won’t need to have McDonald’s for a few days.
