We all love our neighbourhood coffee shops.
Not only are they a convenient place to dabao a quick meal, but their food is also relatively cheaper than food you buy from a shopping mall or restaurant.
However, a customer at a Serangoon coffee shop was not pleased when he had to pay 50 cents for “just plain water.” In retaliation, he took to Facebook to voice his opinion.
Specifically, he took to Complaint Singapore’s Facebook page.
In his post, he included the name and address of the coffee shop and also asked if people would consider it “expensive or not.”
Perhaps he was trying to land the coffee shop in hot water?
Rise in Costs Everywhere
According to Shin Min Daily News, the owner of the coffee shop recently had to increase the price of hot water from 40 cents to 50 cents.
This decision was made due to the rapid increase in water and electricity bills.
This is not an uncommon decision, especially in recent times.
Have you noticed that the price for your favourite chicken rice has increased by at least a dollar?
As a small country with no natural resources, we import 90% of our food. With supply disruptions due to climate change and conflicts, the prices of our food have increased by 4.1% as of April 2022.
Food inflation even increased to 6.1% in July.
In light of the rise in costs, many businesses in Singapore had to increase the price of their products. Some businesses that were previously known for their relatively affordable food had to increase the price of their food and beverages as well.
In short, an increase in costs has affected most, if not all businesses, especially those in the food and beverages (F&B) sector.

Another Glaring Problem
It doesn’t help that some customers like to hog seats.
It’s alleged that some of them even bring their own tea bags and oatmeal to put in the hot water that they bought. Not only does this cause the business to suffer losses, but it also deters potential customers from dining there since the establishment is full.
That’s not very nice.
This is a rampant problem in some coffee shops, where some people hog seats and sit there for the whole day chatting with their friends. Some coffee shop owners have even become reluctant to sell plain water.
