A long long time ago, in a shopping centre far far away…
(Okay, hang on there, that’s too far back)
Unpleasant memories aside, I guess you already know what shopping center I’m going to talk about.
The infamous Sim Lim Square, where honest friendly merchants coexist with vile beings like the one we see above.
Recently, Sim Lim Square has just formed a sales committee. Their goal? A collective sales attempt. In other words, they’re trying to sell the place.
And I’m guessing your reaction will be something like this.
No loss, right? Who still goes there?
Mr. Nicholas Mak, executive director of the ZACD group mentioned, “Rentals have been dropping, and the owners of these commercial properties may be trying now because they saw the successful conclusion of several residential (collective sales).
“Some of these malls were built 20 to 30 years ago, and now with the advent of e-commerce, they have lost their lustre, relevance and customer base.”
After all, with websites like Amazon and Alibaba, it’s so much cheaper to purchase electronics online. I know this quite well, because I’m one of the millions of people out there who are doing this.
It’s precisely due to this and the dishonest merchants operating in Sim Lim Square that Sim Lim square is in a rapid decline.
Mr. Salleh Marican, CEO of Second chance properties and former presidential candidate, owns a total of 12 units at Sim Lim Square. He has voiced his support for the en bloc and thinks that the owners should be happy if such an opportunity were to present itself.
Personally, I believe in adapting with the times. No longer is Sim Lim Square the go to place for electronics like 20 years ago. Like it or not, times have definitely changed. You either adapt and change your business model, or fade into history without anyone noticing.
That being said, perhaps there will be a clearance sale once they’ve managed to find a buyer, eh?
By then, I really hope that the price of the products are cheaper than what we are seeing online.
