There are loads of great things during the Chinese New Year (CNY) period, like food, angpows and all sorts of fun, beautiful festive decor that you can spot.
And if you’re already wondering where to go for your annual Instagram-worthy CNY photos, we’ve got a spot for you.
It’s none other than… *Drumrolls*
The Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall. (Yes, it’s more than a place you go to for your secondary school History field trips lah.)
This CNY, the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall has rolled out a series of events and installations for the public to enjoy.
And the most prominent one is probably the “Bunny-ful Blessings” installation at the memorial hall’s lawn, which includes a pair of inflatable structures shaped like daruma dolls.
I mean, look at them. They look so fluffy and cute, just like marshmallows that I can’t wait to squeeze (or eat- I’m kidding).
As a collaboration between the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall and Hong Kong illustrator and designer Chan Siu Kau, these two structures are designed just like Chan’s own “Bit Bit”, a character in his “Bit Bit Forest”.
The two bunnies, dressed in an auspicious red just like daruma dolls, also have the words “幸” (xìng) and “福” (fú) on them; the former means blessing, fortune and luck, while the latter means happiness. The phrase “幸福” also means happiness or being blessed when put together.
“This installation[,] therefore[,] represents the memorial hall’s wish for a year of good luck and great fortune for Singapore and for Singaporeans to continue to persevere as we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and chart our way forward together in an increasingly complex world.” Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall added on its website.
Mr Alvin Tan, Assistant Chief Executive (Policy & Community) of the National Heritage Board, also pointed out that daruma dolls are often seen as a symbol of good luck in traditional Japanese culture. They symbolise perseverance as well.
As such, Mr Tan said that employing the use of daruma dolls is in line with representing Singapore’s perseverance in fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic and is thus suitable for the upcoming CNY period.
And for those who are already texting your best friends to schedule a trip, the exhibition will be on display from 10 am to 7 pm daily until 19 February 2023, and members of the public can visit the exhibition for free.
However, the memorial hall is closed on Mondays, so keep that in mind when planning your trip!

Apart from that, the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall will also be conducting a series of other CNY-related activities, such as a lion and dragon dance performance, storytelling and craft stations, as well as workshops.
Of the 14 activities, only five are ticketed; the rest are free.
