Sengkang is an ulu place, isn’t it? If you think that there's nothing there besides HDB buildings, you are wrong. Here are some things to do in Sengkang that you probably did not know existed. Sengkang Riverside Park Image: Expat Choice This is the biggest hidden gem in Sengkang where the trees are lush and the birds are aplenty. It is within walking distance from Anchorvale Community Centre and is relatively accessible. On your way to the park, you will come to a point where you can almost see the view of the sky meeting water. The only pity is the TPE obstructing that view which kind of killed the view a bit. If you are someone who loves the serenity of greenery, this is definitely a park worth travelling for. It gets quiet when you venture deeper into the park and you get to experience being in nature. The blue sky coupled with tall bushes of green grass will lure you into serenity. Anchorvale Street, 544834 Sengkang Floating Wetland Image: Little Day Out This is yet another place which is near Sengkang Riverside Park. It forms a seamless connection between the park and the Anchorvale Community Centre, as well as the Sengkang Sports Complex. Sengkang Floating Wetland is the largest man-made floating wetland in Singapore measuring a whopping 2400 square metres. The floating wetland was made to improve the water quality and provide a natural habitat for birds and fishes. Boardwalks were built so that people can access the floating wetland and get closer to the scenic views. Visitors can also learn more about the wetland ecosystem. Anchorvale Street, 544834 Sengkang Swimming Complex Image: ActiveSG Sengkang swimming complex was completed in August 2008 and has since served as one of the go-to places for swimming lessons and water fun. There are eight water slides to be found there, such as the multi-slide, the free fall, the speed slide and the twist slide. There are also splash and slide areas for young children as well as a large Jacuzzi pod for the adults. Lots of things for you to do as a family on a lazy weekend out. It is also affordable as it is managed by the Singapore Sports Council. The entrance fee on a weekend is capped at $2/adult and $1/child or senior. You can use that to pay for entrance to the swimming pool among many others. 57 Anchorvale Rd, 544964 Sengkang ActiveSG Gym Image: ActiveSG This is voted as one of the top 5 neighbourhood gyms by Men’s Health SG and is located in the same compound as Sengkang Swimming Complex. It is a 355-square-meter gym and is considered very spacious. This gym can house many people and they have a relatively big range of weights for you men. The price is also very affordable at $2.50 for the general public and $1.50 for those under 18. Again, sign up at Active@SG if you have not done so. 57 Anchorvale Rd, Sengkang ActiveSG Gym, Singapore 544964 Sengkang Fire Station Image: Today The fire station is open every Saturday morning from 9 am to 11 am and welcomes the public to have an educational visit. It is the biggest fire station in Singapore at 7,000 square meters and boasts a stunning $14 million state-of-the-art facility for the Singapore Civil Defence Force. It houses the first Immediate Response Centre which houses a team of a medical company and a rescue battalion under one roof. Children can visit to learn more about fire-fighting and have a look at the specialised equipment that is used. 50 Buangkok Dr, Singapore 545064 Kopitiam Square @ Sengkang This is located right outside Sengkang MRT, right next to the Sengkang Community Centre. This place is huge and has over 50 stalls serving up great food at affordable prices. Well noted for its variety such as mookata and tze char, the hawker centre is also airy and not too hot. One of the best stalls to try is the Thai mookata stall, 12_45. It cost $32.80 for a set big enough to feed 2-3 pax. The set includes normal mookata basic ingredients like prawns, sliced pork, pork belly, sliced chicken, fish, hot dog, crab sticks and the likes. The best part of the experience is the broth, which I must say that 12_45 really got it right. 10 Sengkang Square, 544829 There you have it, the 10 hidden gems in Sengkang.
