Washing clothes could be a chore at times. And I don’t mean it in the literal sense.
After all, it’s a pretty mundane task that saps your energy and attention, and yet grants you zero caloric burns. So it’s more than possible that you’re gaining weight while you sacrifice your mental energy.
Not worth it.
But it seems things are different now, with this all-new conceptual design that aims to clean all your filthy clothes… at the expense of a fair bit of calories.
Introducing… the Bike Washing Machine!
The brainchild of students at the Dalian Nationalities University in China, this machine enables you to wash your clothes as you pedal.
BWM
The Bike Washing Machine, or “BiWa”, aims to “bring health and convenience to our life” by merging a stationary bike and a washing machine.
According to a description on Tuvie provided by the aforementioned students, the way it functions is not exactly rocket science: “When you ride this bike, the pedaling motion causes the drum of the washing machine to rotate; at the same time, superfluous electricity is generated which can be used to power the display screen or [be] stored for future use.”
However, as you probably noticed, the washing machine doesn’t seem that big.
Regrettably.
Because that’ll mean at least a few spin cycles to clear that towering stack of laundry.
But hey, at least you’ll burn calories. A lot of calories.
It’s not exactly exclusive though
Contrary to what you might expect, the concept isn’t really new. Other designers have attempted to to design similar prototypes, but so far none has successfully made it onto the market.
Release date
It’s unclear when (or if ever) the Bike Washing Machine will be released on the market, as the last known news was in 2016 and there are no hints that the students are planning to push ahead with the project.
So yes, people. You have to wait a while more to apply your professional cycling skills to a mountain of clothes.
In the meantime, why not consider something like this:
It might look less atas, but hey it works.
That’s the important thing, right?
