With the highly transmissible Omicron variant resulting in a sharp spike in community cases, a new COVID-19 treatment facility has been set up.
And it’s catered towards the needs of children and the elderly, as well as their caregivers.
New COVID-19 Treatment Facility At EXPO
Today (14 February), Minister of Health Ong Ye Kung took to Facebook to announce the opening of the new COVID-19 treatment facility situated at EXPO Hall 9.
As seen from the post, the facility has a total of around 824 beds and will bring the total tally for beds available in COVID-19 treatment facilities up to approximately 45,000.
Minister Ong even did a tour around the facility:
Better Care for Infected Children
With an increase in demand for pediatric care when it comes to COVID-19 recovery, the new treatment facility will allow children who are not experiencing severe symptoms to recover.
And COVID-19’s scary for adults, let alone children.
That’s why the introduction of family rooms, where children can move in with a caregiver, will be able to provide them with a comforting and private space to recover.
I mean, the photos make it look like a full-fledged hotel room. I’m sure it’s comfortable.
The rooms also come with a spacious exercise corner, giving patients the chance to still remain active even when in isolation.
Automation in COVID-19 Recovery
In the video, Minister Ong brought up how automation will play a major part in the new treatment facility.
By employing technology in various areas of COVID-19 recovery, the facility will be able to provide more personalised services through platforms such as the TEMI Telepresence by Changi General Hospital and HOPE Technik, which provides telepresence and consultations.
Other forms of technology, such as bots that can deliver and collect linen to and from various patients all around the facility, will also lighten the load of healthcare workers.
Of course, disinfection is also now carried out through technology and machinery, reducing the possibility of the virus spreading within the facility as much as possible.

Vaccinations for Children Still Most Effective
Minister Ong also addressed the issue of children’s vaccinations in his post.
He explained that “The best defence is still to get our children vaccinated”, highlighting the importance of getting vaccinated even though there are more resources around to help children who have contracted COVID-19.
After all, prevention is always better than cure.
