On Tuesday morning, a fire broke out in an HDB flat in Jurong East, killing one resident.

According to a Facebook post by the Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF), a body was discovered in a ninth-floor flat and a paramedic pronounced the person dead at the scene.

At around 2:50 a.m., the SCDF was notified of a fire at Block 236 on Jurong East Street 21. When the firefighting crew arrived, a large blaze was already burning inside the unit.

One of the people living in the affected apartment had already left on their own accord.

One team of firefighters entered the smoke-filled apartment to battle the blaze, while another team broke into the apartment next door and rescued three people wearing breathing apparatus sets.

Back of the building saw the deployment of a combined platform ladder for use in fighting fires from the outside. Three water jets were used to douse the flames.

SCDF reported that damping down operations, the process of applying water to wet burnt surfaces immediately after a fire has been put out, were still underway. This is to ensure that the hot, burned surfaces do not reignite.

The cause of fire is still being probed.

This is the second major fire incident in four days.

Following a fire in one of the units, some 50 residents were forced to leave a Housing Board building in Toa Payoh last Friday evening (12 August). Additionally, one individual was brought to the hospital after inhaling smoke.
