I know I’m late when it comes to this review: it’s like the trend is already over but here I am, talking about this.
But now that McDonald’s latest sensation, the Rich Choco Pie is out of stock and might remain OOS forever, what better time to try KFC’s not-so-new-but-still-new Zinger Mozzarella Burger than now?
When KFC launched this burger, it was almost completely overshadowed by McDonald’s new menu, its viral Rich Choco Pie, the Long-John-Sliver’s-clone Fish & Fries and the taste-real-good Sweet Chilli Fish Burger.
Given McDonald’s recent success in pumping out successful new limited-edition items, KFC might have been feeling like this when they introduced its Zinger Mozzarella Burger.
So, one week later, when people are done with McDonald’s, maybe it’s time to try out the Zinger Mozzarella Burger.
Because, in my humble opinion, it’s so much better than McDonald’s new menu.
Just a brief introduction before we start: KFC tried to make their latest brainchild viral. They got people to suggest what to put in-between a Zinger burger and responded to each suggestion candidly. Here, take a look.
A media invitation for us to try the new burger was also pretty secretive: their PR firm did not mention anything except that it’s a new Zinger (but that’s actually quite common, though sometimes firms just tell us not to reveal anything until the launch), so I thought it would really be like this.
Turned out, it’s something that would make cheese lovers cry in joy: they’re putting a fried mozzarella cheese patty, together with pizza sauce and turkey bacon, in the Zinger.
For the uninitiated, mozzarella is…well, a type of cheese lah. I’m not exactly a cheese lover (nor a food blogger), so all I can say is this: what’s with the chim name, and why not just call it Zinger Cheese Burger!?
Looks
But moving on, here’s how it looks like IRL (no, it wasn’t from the media invitation I mentioned earlier):
Looks-wise, it at least looks pretty similar to what is being marketed (I’m talking about the size).
But just so you know, when I was ordering it in West Mall KFC, I had to wait 10 minutes for it. Not complaining, because so far whenever I was in KFC, I had to wait for something #justsaying
Taste
Here’s where it shines: KFC never fails to disappoint—oh, wait, can’t use that phrase, but actually what I really want to say is that KFC’s new menus usually have more misses than hits (that means they really never fail to disappoint me, no?).
My colleague gave the Mac ‘N Cheese a 2.5 out of 5 stars while the super spicy Red Hot Szechuan Chicken was given a 3.5 out of 5 stars. Of course my colleagues aren’t food bloggers but just fat bloggers, so don’t take their reviews too seriously…though I kind of agree with them.
And this Zinger Mozzarella Burger?
I’ll give it 6 out of 5 stars. Serious.
Zinger has always been a favourite for many, and it’s a large risk to tinker with it. However, the combination of sourness (cheese patty), sweetness (the pizza sauce), saltiness (bacon) and spiciness (chicken patty) is like a heaven from combination: it could just change the popular 成语 usage of 酸甜苦辣 to 酸甜咸辣.
While every bite would remind me of how much I’ve got to run to burn away the calories, it’s hard to stop. The two patties redefine crispiness, and definitely wouldn’t be recommended for a first date because you’ll hear the crunches more than your date’s words.
Seriously, just try it.
But the star of the meal is the new Spicy Potato Bites
Now I’ve got some issue with the name again: it’s not spicy.
But look beyond that and you’ll be greeted with one of the best-est hash brown ever.
It actually comes together with the new burger as a meal.
Here’s the complete meal for your reference:
It might not look good and Instagram worthy, but you’ll forget about that once you’ve one of these gems in your mouth.
Think of it as McDonald’s ironic hash brown cut into little pieces, and with potato that has a slight hint of spice.
Just like its cousin the Zinger Mozzarella Burger, its crisp made it a star.
I’m not sure why it’s not marketed that intensively, but if you’re reaching your calorie intake limit for the day and can only choose between this and the burger, I’ll say go for this.
No, actually, I’ll say go for both and then exercise later.
Verdict
What more can I say? This time, KFC has done it.
So if you need some new fast food to cry over the out-of-stock chocolate pie, this would more than suffice.
