Nasi Lemak Burger is like the next big thing in Singapore and Malaysia: it came with fanfare, got sold out within two weeks and came back in an unprecedented move like a plot twist from a M. Night Shyamalan movie.
Being one of the most successful promotions by McDonald’s, 750,000 of the burgers were sold in that two weeks. If each person in Singapore ate one, that would mean that almost 13% of people in Singapore have tried it.
Not bad for a burger that we personally felt wasn’t up to our expectations.
Now that it’s back, I decided to try it again: not because I wanted to, but because I’ve to work late and therefore left with no other option.
Before anything, here’s something that you really need to know: remember the announcement about the comeback? There are two new items, namely the Sweet Corn Cone and the Potato Wedges.
But look closely and you’ll be disappointed at the small print in red circles: the potato wedges are only available from 7 September.
This is extremely important because I was there partly for the potato wedges, and so was the lady behind me, who specially came down just for the wedges. And as I waited for my food, the cashier was seen pointing at the red circle to every new customer—poor staff.
So remember, if you’re the type who wants to try everything new, wait until 7 September 2017.
Comeback Nasi Lemak Burger: How Does it Taste?
I’ve tried the previous burger and my take is similar to my colleague’s: while the chicken does make the entire burger “feels” like nasi lemak, the lack of rice, a strong sambal chilli sauce and ikan bilis kind of make it less “nasi lemak”.
However, compared to my colleague, I think the burger is still a hit: it’s refreshing and the patty, together with the egg, makes it a perfect blend for a tasty burger that’s way better than most of their other promotional burgers (looking at you, salted egg yolk burger).
In other words, I kind of like it—not to the extent of having yet again, but good enough to have it when I’m in McDonald’s.
Interestingly, the outlet I went to is usually very quiet at night, but yesterday, it’s filled with people again, as if Nasi Lemak Burger is back. Oh wait, it is back.
I’m no food blogger, and since I eat to survive and not survive to eat, all I can say about this comeback burger is that it’s same same but different.
I’m not sure if it’s some psychological effect, but the comeback burger seems more “nasi lemak”. To go even deeper, the patty seems to have more coconut, enhancing the entire nasi lemak experience.
Maybe it’s because there seems to be less sambal sauce. But hey, I’m no food blogger, but one thing I’m certain: absence does make the heart grow fonder.
It now tastes refreshing again. In other words, one month later, the burger tastes “new”.
Verdict
Should you, or should you not try it again?
While the taste might be similar, it’s the novelty of something old that might encourage you to go for it again. If you missed the chance in July, then I’ll suggest you to go for it.
You’ll be wasting some calories, but seriously, you need to experience that “nasi lemak yet not nasi lemak” feel.
Am I making sense here?
