Smokers, you might want to read this cause this article might be pertinent to you.
Quitting is not easy; I should know since I have tried quitting several times.
If you did cross that hurdle, then mad props for you, but what about the damage that is already done to your lungs?
Will your lungs ever work like how they used to pre-smoking?
The answer is a resounding yes.
The miracle food
Avocado might be the “it” superfood now but apples and tomatoes will soon steal the limelight.
According to a study from the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, a diet high in tomatoes(it’s an ongoing debate, really) and fruits might help restore lung damage caused by smoking.
There is a certain component in the aforementioned fruits that slows down the natural decline in lung function.
The research revealed that adults who on average ate more than two tomatoes or more than three portions of fresh fruit a day had a slower decline in lung function compared to those who didn’t.
Before you start double dipping the tomato sauce, the study mentioned that the benefits can only be seen through fresh fruits.
The study
The study assessed the diet and lung function of more than 650 participants in 2002 and the test was repeated 10 years later, using a spirometry (a device that measures your lung capacity).
The results showed a strong correlation between diet and lung function.
Ex-smoker who consumed a diet high in tomatoes and fruits had a slow decline in lung function over the 10-year period.
The study’s lead author Vanessa Garcia-Larsen said: “Lung function starts to decline at around age 30 at variable speed depending on the general and specific health of individuals.”
“Our study suggests that eating more fruits on a regular basis can help attenuate the decline as people age, and might even help repair damage caused by smoking,” she added.
For the non-smokers
You can also increase your intake of fruits and vegetables as well.
“This study shows that diet might help repair lung damage in people who have stopped smoking. It also suggests that a diet rich in fruits can slow down the lung’s natural aging process even if you have never smoked,” said Vanessa Garcia-Larsen.
So, if you’re a smoker or not, load up on fruits and vegetables.
